What causes spark plugs to foul out?

Burning oil is usually the culprit.

Unburnt fuel as well. I had that issue when I mistakenly put too cold of a plug in my truck. I now use the Autolite 24's and they do really well.

I agree with above and both statements have many facets to them.
Burning oil could be caused by: worn rings, worn valve guides, wrong type of oil used, low compression. Fouling from fuel could be caused by: ignition timing, choke not operating properly, idle mixture screws too rich, low compression, dirty cap and rotor, dirty air cleaner. These lists are not all inclusive but probably the most common reasons. Posted via Mobile Device

A wise old man once told me that a "cocoa brown" plug was firing correctly and not to touch a thing. RIP Charlie!
