Re: factory BB horsepower?
SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. The big block in your truck probably put out about 210 when new but unless it's completely stock rebuilt has probably lost some of that. The big engines generally put out a lot more torque. At some point HP was changed a bit I'm not sure whn that happened. You will find that the 210 hp in your truck will not feel the same as 210 in a modern vehicle.A member here has a sig that explains it as "HP is how fast you hit a wall, torque is how far you move it."

Re: factory BB horsepower?
Hi Andy,
The number I calculated is 156.597kw @ 4000 rpm. Even at the 3400 rpm they used it is still about 145kw The page is the factory data sheet for 1972 light trucks as it is noted. Below are some quotes from a site that will help you and they agree with how I understand the ratings and their history. "SAE Net Horspower In 1972, American manufacturers phased in SAE net horsepower. This is the standard on which current American ratings are based. This rating is measured at the flywheel, on an engine dyno, but the engine is tested with all accessories installed, including a full exhaust system, all pumps, the alternator, the starter, and emissions controls. Both SAE net and SAE gross horsepower test procedures are documented in Society of Automotive Engineers standard J1349. Because SAE net is so common, this is the standard we will use to compare all others." "Kilowatts Kilowatts, or kW, is not a different way of measuring engine power; it's just a different unit of measure. Countries that use kilowatts instead of horsepower typically use a rating system very close to SAE net horsepower (usually DIN). To convert kW to SAE net hp, divide the kW value by 0.7457." http://www.hardtail.com/techtips/hpexplained.html

ie: Different exhaust? (dual? headers? or?) or perhaps a different intake manifold and carb? or low restriction air cleaner? Rebuilt? or? If so, this should benefit your dyno numbers to some degree...but keep us posted on how it goes All Good Coley

Re: factory BB horsepower?
To be very clear here. These factory power ratings are for an engine in a test cell with a load dynamometer. While it does have the "as installed" accessories during testing (thus not a "gross" number) it is higher than will be seen in an actual installation and measured at the rear wheels on a chassis dynamometer.
