Has anyone made their own tach dash?

As the title states, has anyone used the tach from here:

http://www.classicparts.com/1967-72-.../#.UZwaqKK1HIY

To retrofit their non-tach dash?

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

Brothers sells the complete conversion kit...you will need a tach lens, new front and rear tins, new circuit board, and a tach harness in addition to the tach itself.

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

I've built them from gathered used parts & N.O.S. long before repro, but never used repro stuff. These kits they sell now make it so easy.

Thanks Ledd, but how about just buying a lens and tack and saving yourself a pile of money?

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

You need the proper tins with the cut outs for the tach, as well as the proper circuit board and harness. You could piece it together from original parts as Special K stated...but you still need this stuff.

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

I did my own for less than $100. I bought a new bezel from Brothers, and then was lucky enough to find a tach dash at the salvage yard. I used the tach, circuit board, and tins out of it, and used my original gauges, and then painted the needles orange and used the Brothers bezel. In addition I replaced all the bulbs with brighter ones. If you search my old posts, you'll see a couple different threads with a how to, but here's the maiden voyage with the final product as I took it for its first test ride

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

My truck did not have a factory tach. The PO mounted this on a non tach circuit board and ran the two wires out the back. The tach itself is is held in with a couple of screws turned in sideways to pinch the tach in place. Seems to work pretty good without having to buy the tach circuit panel, tin, glass, etc. to go the full 9 yards.

On a side note, does anyone know where this tach would have come from. I have searched and could not find it. Does not seem like an original tach from this era of trucks.

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

Interesting write up, I've been wanting to do this, but... Did Chevy ever put a factory tach setup on a 6 cylinder? Will the tach from a v8 work, or will it read incorrectly?

I learned the hard way the first time. I saw a tach in a dump truck and got all excited. I grabbed some tools, pulled the cluster out and removed the tach and lens.I was a happy camper till I realized I needed a lot more parts and how much easier it would have been to just take the whole thing I already had in my hands!

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

What is the difference in the circuit boards for tach vs. non-tach?

There is a bumped out area to fit the tach as well as a hole in the circuit for the tach wiring harness to plug into the tach. Totally different.

I did the Brothers kit as part of my cluster resto and it was pretty easy.

Re: Has anyone made their own tach dash?

Well, for the record, I cut the stock non-tach tins today to fit the tach. It was pretty easy, about an hour with the dremel. I even fabbed up my own wiring harness using pieces of the original circuit. So I ended up with a tach dash for the cost of the tach and lens.

Thanks for the input guys.

Nice... Essentially how mine was done. How about some pics of the finished product?

Interested how it looks too...since the stock tach dash tins are stamped on the inner tin and have a lip there.... The back tin is a weird shape but can be cut.
