picked up an '08 Chevy this weekend

Finally got tired of the '89 K5 as a DD. Found an '08 Chevy CCSB Z71. High miles but the carfax maintenance log was pristine (every 3 mos at the dealer, regular service, etc) and all the important stuff checked out.
The body has some "character" which I kind of like since I'll be using it for work as well as a DD. Nothing big just a few dings.
There's a few things I want to replace straight off;
-Pass. side mirror is cracked. Turn signal inside still works. Can I just replace the glass, or do I have to replace the entire mirror?
-Driver side taillight lens is cracked. Is there a good aftermarket, or is GM the way to go?

On the air intake tube there is a box attached to the front, about halfway. Any idea what that is?

I've never owned a NBS before, trying to get out of the squarebody frame of mind. Any good parts sites?

Congrats, you will love it. I bought an '08 new, then bought another one then sold it and bought a square LOL.

The box is just the sound attenuator.

Congrats on the purchase...
I think you can just replace the mirror glass, or a popular upgrade is to swap out for 2500hd tow mirrors. It would cost more then the glass, but if you tow a lot it's a great upgrade.

As for the taillights are you looking for aftermarket, like LED's or just factory replacement aftermarket? The only thing I would say is if you are going to replace with factory, get one specific to your year. Gm changed the bulb connection point at some point and not all years will interchange.

And yeah, the intake tube has a few chambers on it to cancel noise. They restrict the intake a bit however, and one of the best mods is to order an Airaid Jr kit. All it does is replace the intake tube, with a smoother and more direct tube. The factory intake box is already a cold air intake and flows really well, so theres no need to replace it.

Re: picked up an '08 Chevy this weekend

I'll have to look up some HD mirror pictures, might be a good idea. I see the whole mirror on sites like Amazon. They're listed as power or manual, heat or no heat. Nothing is said about the turn arrow. Is that a given on all of them?

I'm just looking at replacing the lens. But, if upgrading to LED fits the budget, I'm definitely interested in that.

Thanks for the heads up about the Airaid kit.

Re: picked up an '08 Chevy this weekend

They come with or with out turn signals, certain models have different options. They come as manual mirrors, all the way up to fully loaded, with turn signal heat power mirror and power fold. And with a little work it can all be made to work on any truck.

Here's an example

Sorry it's so big, but it was one of the only pics of a stock 1500 with tow mirrors.

That looks pretty good Dalaigh. Is it a direct fit in place of the smaller mirrors?

Here's my ride;

Yes, they bolt right in, and are plug and play. As long as you get the ones that have to same features as your factory mirrors. If you get the fully loaded tow mirrors, then you would need the new drivers power window panel, in order to have the power fold feature.

Re: picked up an '08 Chevy this weekend

Just found mine have power fold. I think all they lack is defrost.
Still discovering what all the buttons do. There's a few more than my '89 had. Discovered the wiper fluid heater last night. Had to laugh at that one. I feel like my callouses might disappear driving this truck.

The defrost button should be on the HVAC controls, I'd find it hard to believe that you have power fold but no defrost. And trust me in the northern states and Canada (like me), the heated washer fluid is a nice touch.

I'll look for the window defrost after work. Didn't think to look for it on the HVAC controls.
