Re: 68 rear change

i have similar question... though my 68 c10 is longbox and is 3.73's... need something stronger but don't want a heavy 14bolt, or to weld all the stuff on there, though that might not be avoidable ..............

Re: 68 rear change

I bought a True trac locker and new gears from Summit, also bought a master rebuild kit and went clear through the rear end.

2.73 gears... really? Thoses were not stock in 68. Since you never stated what ratio you wanted its hard to give specific suggestions. But a new posi carrier to go along with new gears and bearings would be the best way.

If you need a stronger axle there were the big block/manual Spicer/Dana 60 axles in C10s (68,69 and 70 for 6 lug). These were 3.54 though and you would probably need to regear it.

Re: 68 rear change

I would advise against using any used diffs and gearsets. Get a new locker or an Eaton posi-traction with a new set of gears to match. If you cheap out on the gears... you'll be rewarded with a noticeable "whine".
