Rear end dilemma???

Ok, here is my situation, making a daily driver '59. Swapping out the 235 for a 327 that I already have. The rear end is creating a dilemma, either use the turbo 350 I have and swap out the original 3.90 rear end with new camaro/blazer OR keep the original rear end and swap out the turbo 350 for a 200r4 I found a decent deal on ($150). Any thoughts would greatly appreciated.

Re: Rear end dilemma???

both go 3.42 and 200-4R. but if one or the other go with the overdrive.
If funds are tight I would do the trans now and the rear end later mostly because the rear end swap is a easier after the truck is together.

Re: Rear end dilemma???

swap them both if you want hiway speeds and mileage
truk has 3.27 rear gear and 700r4 trans
it gets 20mpg at 80 mph with the ac on
2mpg more than my 09 sierra

Re: Rear end dilemma???

I'd have to go along with installing the trans you want now and doing the rear end later if you need to. The only real issue of doing the work in segments is that you may have to have the driveshaft worked on twice. If I had my druthers I'd do both at the same time.

Re: Rear end dilemma???

The 3:90 is a great ratio for the 200r4. I would swap the trans asap. Its an easy one day job with a CPP universal crossmember, trans cooler, dipstick and tube and choose your shifter. 4th gear tc lockup is the same as 700r. I used TCI set up but would use 1project2manys diagram and a vacuum switch from an 85 van next time. I have 3:73, sometims wanting 4:10 so I would think your 3:90 would be perfect.

You are getting good mileage with the 3.73 very interesting. I have a nice 8.5"non 'C' clip 10 bolt that needs gears. So I too am interested in what ratio works good with the 250.

Re: Rear end dilemma???

I'm getting 20 hwy. Worse in town and worse towing I. Drive 75+ miles round trip a day with it and wanted mpg with an overdrive trans. Now that I'm yankin the trailer around the Northwest, 4:10s or the mentioned 3:90s sound pretty good.

Yep always a compromise. Too bad there isn't a two speed rear end small enough to fit.
