67 c10 collapsable steering shaft

guys...i gotta rebuild the steering coupler on my c10...it has a collapseable steering shaft on it....what my question is.....can that shaft slide apart so i can rebuild the coupler...or will the shaft slide out so far and stop....any help would help...thanks! :-)

Are you talking about the intermediate shaft? The way mine works is it is D shaped and is held together in one place with thermal plastic bond. You can see two small holes with a yellowish plastic inside. If you drill these holes out the shaft will slide apart and yes you can pull it fully apart but the bond is ruined. Not sure how big a deal that is but my understanding is that plastic bond is made to give way in an accident(collapsable).

If you're going to that much trouble and are a "Full Figured Guy" like some of us,there is a write up on how to get a couple more inches of room between the seat and wheel.It's a nice mod since you'll be in there anyway.

its called a intermediate shaft?....ok...i have always called it just a "steering shaft".....i use the old termonology alot......mine is squared...im not sure if it oem..im assuming not...i dont see the two holes your refering to.....the truck has a 3 speed on the column steering column that was converted to a automatic...my coupler is in rough shape...and im going to have to replace the steering box...its bleeding to death.....
