A wood truck is much more likely to die than a non-wood (steel) truck.

any chance the sender isn't long enough?
does it have a return line?
wraprail may have a point ,which cap did you use 87 or 77?
what kind of carb,fuel filter?
my stock carb on my 79 just started to suck the backflow valve out of the fram filter
would leave me dry
