402 carburetor?
hi
my dolly runs good. she has a rochester quadrajet on it i cant find out wat size it is.. don t know where it is wright on it.the cfm size... where did it is written on? my question what is a god carb to fit it? i have 402 bb with a flowmaster exhaust system with custom headers and an edelbrock performer rpm q-jet inlet. it works great but it is old and needs to be overhauled when she is cold she needs 3 4 turns to start...i think i have to change the setup because in europe we run 95 octane... so i perhaps change it completely... or do you think to let it on and only rebuild it? here some pics... maybe anyone knew that thing ![]()

Re: 402 carburetor?
The Quadrajet is an excellent carb. Most of the stock Quadrajets will flow in the 750 CFM range. Yours looks like it could use a rebuild. Cliff Ruggles is an excellent source for information and parts:

Re: 402 carburetor?
If it works well, I would rebuild the Qjet. A Qjet is a great carb for mileage and power. They get a bad reputation because if not rebuilt correctly, theyt can bog and do other bad things.
If you are dead-set against the Qjet, Holley used to have a carb just for this application-402BB spreadbore 750CFM vacuum secomdaries. I ran one on a 455 Pontiac years ago and it was a good match for it too.

Re: 402 carburetor?
Well, If you reside in germany, you will need to locate a knowledgeable repairmen/shop. If you will rebuild it yourself, then research is the best start to understanding. Good source for parts:
http://www.carburetion.com/ They are not really that difficult to rebuild and set up. Here is another link to assist: http://www.florida4x4.com/tech/

I highly recommend you keep the quadrajet and take on the rebuild yourself.
They are good carburetors and they are not above being rebuilt or renewed by someone with reasonable mechanical skills and understanding. The biggest start point is to see how much 'play' is in the throttle shafts...particularly (and usually) the primary throttle shaft. Here is a really interesting video on rebuilding one....from teardown to rebuild although he doesn't really discuss the throttle shaft issue. (just follow the series through 1 by 1...very helpful and interesting and there are a few other good unrelated videos as well) To be quite honest, if you get a carb kit for it...carefully disassemble it and VERY, VERY thoroughly clean it and re-assemble it....you'll be surprised at how much better it runs. OR as a lesser start point...remove it from the engine...soak it, clean it heavily with carb cleaner from both ends and then use compressed air to thoroughly blow it out. Regardless,....keep the quadrajet!!...its a very good carb when its set up properly. Good luck and Wie Gehts!! Coley ![]()

Re: 402 carburetor?
While the video's will help you he does install the needle with the small clip on to the float incorrectly. The wire doesn't get hooked thru the hole. The wire gets hooked on from behind like in this link. If you hook it thru the hole the needle is pulled off centre and you'll get a flooding situation.
And this another good link for you. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...#Trouble_spots |
