Throttle Pedal Assemblies

I'm putting a TPI engine in my wife's '57 pickup.

I'm looking for a throttle pedal assembly and cable set up for it. In particular, I'm looking at what Lokar has on their site.

For what I'm doing with the pickup, looks is not as important as value. So, if there's something I can get easily at a wrecking yard that works well, that would be good.

What have you all used with success?

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

Floor mounted lokar works great for me. Have used a mid 80s set up and fabbed the firewall side bracket before too.

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

Mid seventies trucks have one that mounts on the firewall and pulls a cable. I think Lokar, etc. took the design and cleaned it up. It sits up high enough that you would have to squat to see it. I sold both of the ones out of my 74 donor trucks to hot rod guys. I use the one that came out of my 62 engine donor truck in 85. It is a rod that pivots thru a bracket/hole in the recessed part of the firewall.

I'd like to get this ordered soon.

Is this the one you are using?

Does it feel pretty natural? Not awkward foot position at all?

I noticed Lokar has a spacer too. Is that not necessary?

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

Yep, same one.. Feels fine although I questioned that also. I googled several videos on mounting it and it does not mount square. You must kick the base clockwise at an angle so it lays natural.I didn't use the spacer and would have loved to have the engine trans out or a second set of hands, tightning the bolts is tricky. It is leterally a plug and play set up with their universal style cables and specific carb brackets. remember to use the hole closest to the pivot shaft for full throttle adjustment. I used the lowest hole on the pedal end and the furthest hole from the pivot to break in the new motor (1/2 throttle) then moved the cable pull closest to the pivot shaft at the carb end for full throttle pull. you can also adapt the stock throttle pad to the lokar like RusselAshley did to give it an oe look and feel, but a cable set up.

Thank you very much for that info.

I'll search and see if I can find Russell's post on that. I'd like to see what it looks like.

Got any pics of yours?

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

I used the Lokar pedal on a '52 and as you can see the black lay out shows how you need to angle it over like newfisher said to make it feel right.. I did use the spacer because the padding and carpet was thick I thought it would not let the pedal go all the way down. I think you can see the spacer in the last picture.

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

A TF has an indentation in the floor where the original pedal was mounted. I mounted the Lokar straight up and down because it fit into this indentation. When I got the Lokar installed I placed the original pedal over it at the angle I wanted and drilled and tapped two holes in the Lokar pedal. I used two flat head allen screws to attach it. The original pedal is wider so you can't get to the Lokar mounting screws with it attached.

That is way cool!

Do you think if I use carpet with a standard jute underneath that I will need the spacer?

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

I think you would need the spacer if you want to mount the pedal on top of the carpet. The spacer would probably need to be under the carpet and the pedal on top. I have the jute pad under my rubber mat and the spacer might have made the installation a little easier. I cut my mat to fit around the pedal mount and lap over it so my mount doesn't show, but this was by necessity, not for looks. The pedal looks good when mounted on top and visible.

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

Thanks.

That makes sense.

I can't make up my mind. I'm thinking that one this style may have a feel more like a newer car.

I'm building this truck for my wife to drive and I want her to be as comfortable as possible.

I sure like the looks of that original pedal on the floor mount Lokar like you've got though. But for her I think comfort will overrule looks.

Btw,

I'm on this now because Classic Industries is having a 20% off Memorial Day sale and I've got an order together for several items.

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

I have a rubber mat, but would use the spacer if you are running carpet. I had purchased the above hang style one first and didn't like the look or placement, returned it and got the floor mount style for the AD

I just got my wife in here to study them and let her make the decision.

Floor mount it is. I'll get that and the spacer from Classic Industries at 20% off.

Thanks guys.

Btw, she is interested in putting the old original pedal on top like you did Russell. We will revisit that when the time comes.

Re: Throttle Pedal Assemblies

So, that's just the pedal? What year does the firewall side stuff come from? Anyone have a pic of engine side?

I used the Lokar throttle and it has a good feel to it. Easy to install and comes with lots of cable and cable housing.

I had a junk yard pedal that was shaped and worked about the same as these, and I was using a Mr Gasket universal cable. The problem was that the cable came through the firewall about four or five inches to the left of where it anchored to the bracket on the rear of the carb. The cable housing was only 6 1/2 inches long after I cut it to fit and it required that it be bent sharper than I wanted to bend it. I never was satisfied with the setup.

Since I have a TPI in the truck, I think that setup would have worked fine.

It was the looks of the floor mount that won my wife over.
