truck style LS1 motors

anyone out there running one of these in 67-72 chevy trucks? do the mount the same as the vette and camaro`s? i know the car LS1 motors are ll together different with the mounting but i haven`t heard much about the trucks. i was going to go bigblock and still may, but i`m not having much luck finding a decent one for a good price around my area. i`m also getting to the point where i just want to drive this truck anywhere and not have to stop for gas every 20 feet. thanks

I have heard of some guys putting gen 3 engines in 67-72's. it would make your truck alot more enjoyable to drive.

It's not an LS-1 engine, it's an LS-1 style engine. Like the new 5.3L truck engine. I don't know about the mounts, but I know someone form the board has a LS-1 from a car in his truck. Had to fab the mounts. I am sure you would have to do it also for the trucks.

thanks for the info everyone. i forgot that they were LS1 style and not LS1 motors. i figured they would be cheaper than the vette or camaro LS1. the only thing that drives me crazy about these trucks is there is too many options when it comes to motors. i just can`t decide what to go with. thanks again

I have been thinking about the same thing. Put a 5.3L in my truck. I think it will be a lot cheaper than the 5.7L (LS1) due to the shear numbers of trucks with this engine in it versus the number of camaro/corvettes outh there. Also would pick up the 4L60E. Ought to be good for at least 20 mpg.

The 5.3L have good performance potential too.

I think the 5.3L mounts are the same style as the LS1s, so you'd need to either fab some up, or buy some aftermarket ones.

the GM truck line of motors are based around the LS1 vette motor. there are some differences. iron blocks vs. aluminum. the truck heads will bolt to the LS1 motor, and the LS1 intake will bolt on the truck motor. it is cheaper to find a 6.0L motor and build it. more torque. take the 6.0L and order a 4 inch stroke crank, rods, and pistons from lunati. comes out to 408ci. add ported 6.0L heads and a LS6 intake. i know i am skipping alot of things but you can get an idea. i have seen this motor combo make over 500hp and 510ft lbs tq. and still pull down 18mpg. it is just a thought.

What he is talking about is the new generation of GM small block. The LS1 is the most common name used. The 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 all use the same style block. The trucks used a cast iron block with aluminum heads, and the F-body/Corvette got an aluminum block as well.

They all mount the same, and will not just "bolt up" to anything prior to what they are intended for. There are a few compainies that make motor mounts for them though.

If you are serious about the conversion, I can put up more info. I can tell you now that it's not cheap...

My dad has 5.3 in his Silverado and it Friggen rips! but I can imagine most junkyards want an arm and a leg for the motor, tranny and all the electronic goodies that go with it

I'd reccomend a 96 up vortec 5.7 This motor has awesome heads! Rods that are rated for up to 7000 rpm. A Hyd roller cam and they are cheap. You should be able to get a buildable motor for around 300 bucks. I am basically running this combo with a zz4 cam flat top pistons and a cheap aftermarket crank. I am very impressed with it.
