help with a 50

OK so heres my problem I just picked up a 50 the wheels in the back are to tall and hitting the bottom of the bed. I still have the 6 lug axle in the back.

Dose anyone know what stock gm wheels will fit this bolt pattern was looking for steel wheels. Yes I know stock will fit but I was going to try to get some out of the junk yard so i can drive it to work and get the extra cab out of the back.

The ones pictured look late model with a front drive style offset. Any 80's 1/2 ton 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive GM wheel should work for you. It won't keep the bottom of the bed from laying on the top of the tires. Air lift bags, air lift shocks or a helper spring in the leaf pack will accomplish this.

Re: help with a 50

As Newfisher said, it isn't the tires and wheels as much as it is the fact that the flatbed sits low and doesn't give much room between the bottom of the bed boards and the top of the tire.

The simple fix is to not carry loads on it outside of a cooler and a pair of lawn chairs. Since that probably isn't the plan I'd suggest either a set of overload springs that clamp to the axle and ride against the frame when you get a load on the truck, a set of leaf style overload springs, Air shocks or make some wheel tubs out of some heavy plate or diamond plate and cut out the boards over the tires and put the tubs in. They could be made low enough to not show to the side over the bottom board of the stake racks but would give you four or five more inches of tire clearance.

Re: help with a 50

With that much weight coming off the back end it should have raised up almost three inches. My guess is that a previous owner removed several leaves from the springs and they have sagged to the point that they are bottomed out. Have you taken a good look at the rear suspension to see what might be the issue?

I didn't take time to hunt down the other thread about you finding it but what engine and carb does it have?

If it has a six check the carb to see that it is tight on the manifold and that the body is tight on the base. Just grab it up near the top and twist back and forth and see if it moves. I've done battle with a couple of single barrel carbs that had the screws that held the body to the base loosen up and got a heck of a deal on a car for my daughter because of that once.

Other than that the usual tune up things apply.

Re: help with a 50

Well what ever the problem is its getting worse. I went out and tried the truck today it wont even idle on its own.

So I tried testing my vacuum advance with the motor off I pulled the advance line off the carb and sucked on it. The rotor on the dizzy didn't move. It actually never built up any suction it was comparable to sucking on a straw with an open end. So do you think my advance is bad and would that be causing my problem?
