Mufflers on a frequently driven truck

I am throwing around a few ideas for mufflers on my '49.

Setup:
Chevy I6 292
Langdon's split exhaust manifolds
2.25" exhaust

Mufflers in debate:
Flowmaster HP2
Flowmaster 50 series delta flow


I have searched other threads and everyone wants the loudest ones available, which is great if you drive the truck on Sunday or a few times a month. My '49 will be my daily driver and I wanted to see what most of you daily drivers run for a setup. I like the throatiness of the 40 series, but cannot do that day in and day out (neither can the neighbors probably). I like the HP2, but haven't seen many reviews on them.


So what are you setups for mufflers? How do you like them? Bit too loud or quiet? Do you daily drive your truck?

I drive my I6 250 every day. Langdons, 2.5 into a Y and then single in and single out of a Magnaflow 3 chamber truck muffler. Throaty whenyou want it and calm when you don't. Www.12bolt.com watch the video of the malibu wagon. I duplicated that system (and engine)

I actually saw you respond to an earlier post and was looking at your setup. I wanted to run duals all the way back, however you said you use to be a Flowmaster guy and then went to Magnaflow. How come?

Ha well after doing research all morning, I end up going with 2 of Flowmasters HP2. I really like the sound of them.

Now we wait.

I have been a flowmaster guy all along. I switched to the Magna flow to replicate Tom's wagon in the video. I could have used a Flomaster, but didn't want to risk the change in tone with the 2 into 1 at 2.5 inch. Probobly wouldn't have even noticed a difference, but I do like the Magna flow in this set up. I have yet to have someone think it's a 6 when they hear it running before I pop the hood. I have had several I6's, mostly 235's and have split them at the bumper, out at the corners, turned them down etc and this is the first dual to single set up I have done and love it.

On my Chevelle and truck before I ran 16" Dynomax turbos, liked the sound. This time around I got the same but in 2.5" x 24" length to quiet it down. Haven't started the engine yet so do no know the results. Running full tail pipes will help too.

After watching that video I have my exhaust planned and I do not even have a motor in my possession yet!!

Outside of paint color and wheel/tire choice how you want your pipes to sound is one of the most personal choice things on a truck or car and what one of us likes may not be at all what someone else likes. I agree with you 100% Focusontheprize that all too many guys just want LOUD and have no clue about tone quality.

Personally I like the sound of smaller diameter pipes and steel or glass packs but that sound isn't the favorite with a lot of guys now who want more of a rumble in their pipes rather than the 50's 60's rap that I grew up with when you knew who was coming down the street without looking by the sound of his pipes.

That Chevelle is just flat nasty sounding along with being healthy sounding.

I don't have any input on the 6cyl exhaust but I do agree with mr48chev about individualized taste. I like how my suburban sounds, so I picked up a nearly new take-off muffler off a 2012 Silverado that I'm going to run on my truck downstream from the 5.3. I won't have cats so it won't be exactly the same, but I'm hoping for close (quiet).

Dynomax Super Hemi Turbo Mufflers with the 20" case.
The best combination of good flow and quiet out there.

I’m running Flowmaster 50 series SS mufflers. The reason for my decision was based on the length of my exhaust system being short due to my truck being bagged. My exhaust tips also exit just in front of the rear wheels. I like loud exhaust but I didn't want that noise right by my ear all the time.

I like the overall sound both when idling as well as going down the road.

@mr48chev: Agreed with that statement. The trouble is hearing the sound on a somewhat similar setup with these I6s. I do like the rumble more than the 50/60s sound because I am not too use to that sound.

I will get a sound clip when I eventually get mine setup. We should build a collection of our own sounds clips with the exhaust on the I6s.
