1971 ... boat?

I don't get the whole boat thing.I love them and enjoy them but with the low cost of renting one,why would you want to own a "Hole in the water to throw money in"?I mean unless you can and will actually use it a lot.Most people I know use their boat every weekend the first year or two they own it,then a half dozen times for a year or so then once or twice a year until it becomes to expensive to maintain for as little as it gets used.The ones who use their boats enough to really justify the expense usually live on a lake or have a weekend retreat on one.
All that said,I'd really love to own a classic wooden speedboat or one of the high performance speedboats with inboard power.I just wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost.

My boat cost me less than what it would cost me to rent a crappy bayliner, for just one summer. You'd be suprized what an decent old flatty cost, unless its some wild custom they aren't worth more than what it would cost to build the drivetrain.

Just catching up on this tread! LOVE all the boats. I am with SS_Tim on the Whaler for the specific reasons he mentioned. It really would just be an 'out and about on the bay' hole explorer for my little family. Not looking at watersports, or speed - the Whaler with a decently reliable outboard will do everything and anything I want to do.

Now, all that being said, the inboard and I/O speedsters look incredible and would be another fun thing to wrench on ... constantly. However, the boss has spoken and she does not want me spending our retirement on a 70's boat that will need to be overhauled every summer. LOL She seems to think that the maintenance on a little Whaler with a moderately horsed outboard WON'T cost an arm and a leg ... I bet I can prove her wrong.

I agree on the whalers, There are great for fishing, diving, camping, picnics, cruising, and skiing. It's a boat you can afford to maintain and their easy to work on. Everything is out in the open. And if you cut one in half it still floats.

You can't go wrong with a Correct Craft boat. I'm on my 5th Correct Craft as the family enjoys the lake. Of coarse the current boat is too big to be pulled "safely" behind the C10. Then again my truck would need to be finished to know the true answer.

Having way too much fun here aren't we? Anyway a 13' is lighter and easier in real shallow roll off style trailering. Been to more than a few holes we were glad to have roller bunks and a tilt to get in and out with.
