whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

Tried putting a new nut while installing my new steering wheel. The cheap aftermarket nut stripped the threads on the shaft. What size is that so I can get something to repair it?

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

Also need to know what type screw( bolt) was used on the glovebox door. Mine are long gone now. This is what happens when you loose steam on a project like this.
Thanks

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

Glove box to hinge looks like a 10-32 x 3/8" shoulder screw. My taps only go to 1/2 is, steering column center bolt looks like 9/16 NF threads jamp type nut (thinner then regular) BUT it might even be finer threads. I would get it in a grade 8 since it has to pull the wheel down on the shaft threads. Aftermarket nut was probably made off shore, I've had problems with them too cross threading or being just enough off to mess up the threads.

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

I'm reading 1/2"-20 from other sources
Not sure what classic sent me. I'm pissed because now I have to go out and buy a new nut and the tool to cut new threads.
Thanks for your help, I'll try that other size for the glovebox door

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

You might be right, I assumed that since the spline was the same on my 82 column the nut was the same size. My original column is long gone. I did a quick search and the 1/2 x 20 came up for some 50's gm applications.

.500-20UNF is a standard 1/2" fine pitch thread and should be easy to find.

Ace Hardware and Sears are my go to for taps and dies I do not have. If you are in the sticks they should be able to find one online. I do NOT buy these types of tools from HF, this is one that price and quality do make a difference.

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

I boght a set from orielys, I did correct the threads on the nut but im catching hell with the shaft. Its harder and doesn't start threading that easily. I think I need a fresh die.

Re: whats the thread size for the steering shaft?

I've got a 3 corner file that has almost a knife taper to it that I use to dress threads so that I can get a die on them. I think the file is a Nicholson 14324M that is six inches long and can be found or one quite similar can be found.

I just use the edge of it to dress the threads until I get them to where the die will start on them.

I'm sorry but when you say dress the threads what do you mean? I'm green here.

You can also get a thread file to straighten up the threads. It is a square piece of hardened stock that has many different thread pitches on the sides. You can get 8 different pitches on one file. This is a handy tool to keep around.
