old school coil spring rear stabilizer
I bought this 71 Custom 20 and it was a telephone company truck originally.
It had a Stahl service body with a ladder on it and this is some sort of stabilizer system for the suspension. Never saw one like it. Pardon the other brackets that were for the body which I have not removed yet. I am going to try to hunt up a 8' stepside for it and take'r down to the farm for a weekend gravel road and field crossing truck. |

Interesting there Tim. What plant is that SPID from in 71? Wonder if that sucked the axle to the stops when the ladder was raised?

I worked for a company years ago that had a 1 ton.It had leafs though.They used it for a dump truck.It was extra heavy suspension and had been a Bucket truck for the electric co.I don't remember the code but it was on the SPID.It may have been COPO since it was a fleet truck.I don't recall it having any stabilizers like that on it though it could have been a bed mounted stabilizer which was removed to install the dump bed.It did have stabilizers mounted to the dump bed that tilted down with the rear of the bed when it was raised.

It is a St. Louis built truck. I got the other iron off the top tonight and will try to take some more pics. Its definitely some type of stabilizer system and was not factory. The body was a Stahl as mentioned and it was installed by Steelweld, a company that completes cab-chassis. Was sold new by a dealer in Pleasant Hill MO to a United Telephone Company in Harrisonville MO. Has all the docs in the glove box, even has the booklet on the utility bed.
This thing is mounted to both sides of the axle and has links that mount to a cylindrical tube up on the frame. Its one heck of a stabilizer if that is truly what it is. More pics when I can. |
