Front Bumper D-Rings
So I got invited to a mud party but, one of the rules was you had to be able to pull your truck out. Currently my truck only has one option and that is the rear bumper. I read a thread on front tow hooks and that got me thinking about how I could do something similar with my truck.
I had a local shop weld d rings onto 1/4 inch plate. Next I'll cut out holes in my bumper and weld them in. Then I'll use 1/4 inch angle iron and attach to the frame. |

Hey, that's a neat ole truck. How much does it weigh? You probably know, if you are going to weld the rings onto the plate place them as close to the frame horns as possible. Have fun at the mud party!

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
Not going to make the mud party.
But your right. The bumper is attached with angle iron that is mounted within the frame rails. My thought was to extend that angle iron and weld it to the back of my D ring plates. You can see the angle iron in the third picture. I don't have a plasma cutter so I used my 4 1/2 inch grinder to start cutting into the bumper. What I didn't plan on was how many discs it would take to cut through. Thanks, Wayne |

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
Personally i would grind a bevel in them before for a good root then put a cover over that as one can never go overboard when dealing with something that can potentially break and hit someone

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
Personally, I don't care for D Rings like that. Usually people do not have a hook that will fit on to one of those. Shackles with removable pins are much more versatile. It definitely beats having nothing at all though! Keep a couple shackles with your recovery equipment and you should be good to go.

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
I beveled the front and back of the plates, the bumper as well and cleaned up all the rust and paint.

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
So here is what I've got done so far.
The rings are mounted. Still need to weld onto the angle iron connected to the frame. Then, I'll blast the bumper and primer and paint. Had to halt work for a little bit while the wife uses the garage for her garage sale. Thanks, Wayne |

Re: Front Bumper D-Rings
Did you gusset or plate behind the rings? Remember a good mud stuck can have a drag coefficency of double the weight of the truck. The recovery points need to be up to the task as well as your bumper mounts. Good luck getting your garage back!
