The 72 got the rear sport bumper today

Thanks to IronMike, I have the sport bumper installed on the 72 today. It is not perfect but a far cry better than that late model thing it had before.

I need to get the gate painted but I am considering a complete repaint as there are other body work issues to address. Like the aux fuel doors and the cowl needs replaced. The paint is not great but is not horrible either. One step at a time

Do we get to poll on colors? Kind of like the gate better than the truck color. :-)

I remember a man that once said "you can have it any color you want as long as it's black"

As I am a fan of Ochre/White, I would love it all Black too.

Looks really nice. Sometimes I toy with the idea of getting a sport bumper, but then I'd lose my fancy bottle opener lol

Cool. I'll have to keep an eye out for a decent one at the yard. I got a new DeWalt 18 volt impact wrench, with impact sockets, and I tell you what...it makes very quick work out of removing rusty bolts. I don't know how I got along all this time without it

Re: The 72 got the rear sport bumper today

Ask anyone who is looking for one and they will tell you they are hard to find in decent condition. There is always the aftermarket solution if you don't care about originality. I would have eventually bought an aftermarket but this came up and I could not pass it up. Equally hard to find is the brackets, license plate holder and licence plate light housing.

Most trucks I see have a form of a step bumper which I think is OK for a 3/4 and 1 ton. For a 1/2 ton with a Cheyenne package, it has to have a sport bumper in my opinion.

Thank you for the comments and that reminds me that I will not have time to get to Bakers today. Do they have it every week? It is about a 30 mile drive for me. Either way, you are close enough so that we can meet sometime.

Right, In fact most of the pickups were built without a rear bumper. When it comes down to it a step bumper is a working bumper. Even my 79 G van had a factory step bumper on it. Plus there are few empty pickups that don't benefit from the extra 40 lb or so a step bumper weighs over a standard bumper. But to characterize as a "must have" I can't see the standard bumper as the "go to" solution for more than appearance. Imagine my chagrin when I found a "Holy Grail" of mine a C30 Cheyenne Super Longhorn with a documented chrome standard rear bumper.
But if you can find a good unpeeled standard bumper by all means save it.

Just think of the hours you can spend bonding with your truck waxing it's new black paint! :-)

IMO sport bumpers look best on showy or lowered trucks. On a truck like yours having the versatility of the step bumper while using your truck as a truck is the way to go. I like the steps on 4x4's, and all trucks that are actually used as trucks. Try stepping up into the bed of a truck like yours is just a little bit more difficult and you are gonna worry about scratching a shiny new sport bumper.

I concur with CG. With all respect to those who would say otherwise, IMHO your truck has step bumper all over it. My lowered shorty - not so much, but yours.... yes.

Re: The 72 got the rear sport bumper today

All good points being made and thank you so much for the (tease) photos Tim. Now I am wondering about a color change because the black just looks so nice. Don't worry a bit, I know what is involved with having a shiny black vehicle. You cannot deny it is just something that demands attention.

As far as the bumpers go, I like the fact that if I need to step up into the bed, most of the time I can just open the tail gate and step right on up. My Cheyenne sets low enough for me to do that. It is done for the most part as a work truck. I have my eye on a 70 C20 that I am trying to convince the owner to sell me. So far he is not budging. That is OK because I am not ready to own it yet.
