Anyone do their own tint?

I'm sure this topic had been brought up a few times before but I've got a few questions. I picked up a couple rolls of tint the other day and tried my first attempt at tinting my own windows. It was an epic failure. I can't seem to do it without creasing it. I've got enough tint to try again, but I decided to ask around on here first. So, if anyone has done it by themselves, any advice? Pics would be great too!

I've done it on quite a few cars, but I usually spend as much in more tint to replace the failed attempts than it would have been to get it done professionally.

Professional tint usually holds its colour better (doesn't go purple).

I wouldn't do my own windows again. I'll "pay the man."

I've tinted windows twice on two different rigs.
'69 Chevelle epic failure and '86 Toyota pickup great sucess.
If your tinting flat glass, that will be to your advantage IMO.
I got a spray bottle and filled it with warm soapy water.
Just a drop or two of soap in the bottle is all you need. I think I used Joy or Dawn.
Get plenty of lint free towels (if possible) cause your going to wet the glass and back side of the tint so you can move it around a tiny bit and get it in place. You won't use the towels on the glass but lint tends to fly around so its just a precautionary thing to help have better success.
I started out by wetting the glass and tint (tint to window side), tucking the tint into the bottom of the glass ( in between the glass and the rubber/felt strip along the top of the door/bottom of the glass).
Using a credit card or something like that worked best for me.
Then roll wetted tint up while gently squeegeeing the bubbles out (if possible have someone spritz water for you while your rolling and squeegeeing).
Squeegee the bubbles from the center out. Get a soft squeegee and spray the soapy water on the tint (side away from glass) to prevent scratching.
Don't cut your tint to fit the window until you have the tint in place.
Or cut out a larger piece to work with but plenty of excess to trim off later just in case some areas are mis-measured. Do Not cut your tint to fit your window before applying.
Use a new razor blade to trim the excess tint off and let sit.
I didn't drive, or roll the windows up or down for 2 days to let the tint dry completely.
The Chevelle attempt was done outside and the wind fought me the whole time.
The pickup was done in my grandma's garage and turned out fantastic.
Good luck. Be patient. Don't get into a hurry and don't have any breeze.

Brownie was self tinted twice, and twice it turned purple, next time i'm going to shady's tint shop.

I've been ok on flat bits....curved no
clean both sides of the glass,wet wet and wetter,don't let it dry
you put the tint on backwards on the out side to trim it down
(you end up with the film to remove against the outside of the glass
most kits have a rubber squeegee to push the water out
I've seen the large shower ones used as well

Ive had some chrome/mirror tint i want to try for a while...

If possible on the side windows you should consider taking the glass out that way you can do the tint with the window laying out in the open.

easiest way to tint is to buy the pre cut window tint on ebay......Cheap and a perfect cut and fit. Always tint in the shade and wet, wet , and wet is the key. I just bought a pre cut kit for my 85 Silverado yesterday from ebay for 23 bucks. This will make the 5th truck I've done with the pre cut stuff and you just cant beat it. Now if your trying to tint something with a curved glass then leave that to the pro's. Flat pickup windows is no problem though.

it takes quit a bit a practice I remember my first tint job Lol but now im pretty good at it just make sure that on curved windows you want to shape the tint to the glass so what you do is get your tint all cut to the window your gonna tint spray the glass use a heat gun or hair dryer and heat the tint up and it will go with the curvature of the window make instillation ALOT easier and you wont have near as man fingers pop up in the tint

Ever notice window tint jobs that have little air pockets? These didn't show up when the job was done, but some time later. This is due to imperfections in the glass that you can't feel with your hand or sqweegy. You need to take a razor blade and scrap the entire window surface prior to tinting. You'll be amazed at these tiny bumps that allow air to be trapped under your tint.

I have done my own and it awalys comes out like s**t. You need a steady hand and many new razor blades or exacto knife.
Check youtube. Best info is on youtube.

On my windshield I use "insta-cling" 5% temporary tint which is 11" wide covering the top. Never had the law inquire about it (yet) but when the day comes I can peel it off in seconds hopefully avoiding a ticket.
Thats my plan anyway.

I have tried this and scratched both side windows on installation. (they are still scratched!)
On the back window this worked great

There are marks on each side of your windshield within a few inches of the top. No tint is allowed below that line.

I'm certain it is up to each states motor vehicle laws as to how much you can tint.
