Which grade of bolts
When replacing old tired bolts and nuts, which grade do you use for things that hang off the motor? Like power steering pumps, alternators... Grade 2, 5, or 8?

Grade 8 or OEM usually.
Grades 8 doesn't cost that much more. I would avoid grade 2. Often OEM bolts have grade identifier. |

Grade 8 as much as possible. Not that much more expensive.

I always use grade 8 anywhere possible---need it or not.

YES grade 8. If it is in high moisture areas, stainless is good too. They are in between 5 and 8 for hardness but also resist rust. I use a few of them but they are pricier.

Grade 8 - always.
I've lowered suspension on more than a dozen vehicles (granted, they were s-10's  ) But you always use Grade 8

aircraft grade stainless for most things that mount on the motor been doing it over 50years(pop worked for grumman) never had a problem with stuff fallin off due to bolt failures// i think grade 8 is way overrated for most things that guys use them for

factory used grade 5 for everything except high stress stuff like flywheel,clutch,and u joints...no reason not to upgrade to 8...but don't feel you have to run out and buy a grade 8 bolt when you have a 5 that fits

Grade 5 for brackets off the engine (alt, power steering, A/C, etc). Grade 8 is overkill for those.

There are some things that may not be considered here. That is that grade 5 has changed. The bolts USED to be all US made when our trucks were assembled. US made unplated bolts had a higher tolerence than the foreign made of the time. They would be +30% -5% as I recall. That has changed.
I have had 3/8 grade 5 bolts break at 25 ft/lbs of torque DRY. Also the grade 5 of the day were not zinc plated in most cases which reduces strength by about 15%.... Spend the extra 15¢ a bolt and get grade 8.

Looks like I will be using grade 8.
Follow up question: Where do you buy them? Locally I have been picking up grade 2, 5, and 8 at Orscheln' and Race Brothers - both farm supply stores that sell the different grades in bulk bins. Grade 5 is $2.99 per pound, grade 8 is $3.99. Should I be worried about buying from the bulk bins? Posted via Mobile Device |
