04 Suburban front end pop question
I have a 2004 Suburban 4wd with 140,xxx miles on it. Recently I have noticed a popping noise coming from the right front wheel when I am turning a corner at low speed and also when backing up. I have pulled the wheel and checked the ball joints, control arm bushings and tie rod but can't seem to find the source of the mysterious pop. Anyone have any similar issues?

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
I'm assuming you checked the wheel bearings?
I had a pop issue on my old 97 4wd Burb on take offs. It was solved when I replaced the calipers during a brake job. Apparently miles and miles of use wears the caliper where it slides on the spindle. They may have been sticking a bit and once it started rolling forward it would pop loose. Quite loudly too.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
The wheel bearings appear to be fine. I will check the caliper, I never thought about that being the culprit. I must say that GM put some hefty brake pads on this thing. It has 140,000 + miles on it and there is STILL pad left on all 4 wheels.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
That's great.
Lot of highway miles there? I'd be putting the same type back on there too.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
Are you sure its the right front? Could be a shock bushing letting the shock stud hit the frame. Kinda common. the only reason I ask if you are sure where its coming from is the steering shaft in these trucks make a lot of noise.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
I have an 03 Z71 Tahoe that has a pop in he right front when backing up and turning from a dead stop. Sometimes it pops when moving forward slowly from a stop but you have to be turning. Its intermittent but slowly becoming more prominent. I have replaced the upper control arm, the wheel bearing, and lower ball joint as they have failed. But the popping noise is still there. I cannot find it. I can even get it to pop when turning left into the driveway but only when the right front meets the gutter. You can almost feel it in the passenger floorboard. I hev checked and double checked the steerng and column, the transfercase crossmember to frame mounts as well as the torsion bar mounts. Even had a suspension and steering specialist from a local alignment shop vo thru everything and he couldnt find it even after verifying the noise. Im starting to wonder if its a body mount.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
That seems to be the direction that it is coming from. I checked the shock and it appeared to be tight. I pulled the caliper bolts last night, cleaned and lubed them to make sure the caliper was free. It is still popping though.

Re: 04 Suburban front end pop question
The mysterious pop ended up being the adjustment bolts on the upper control arm. Somehow or another one worked itself loose.
