Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
Another unfair question, but one I will typically throw out there.
I will copy and paste the ad below in bold italics. KEEP IN MIND, I am also looking in the USA for trucks that fit my budget and wish list. Ideally I am looking for a 60-66 C10 Short Fleetside. Original paint preferred V8 and a modern manual gearbox would be good. Smoothies, Rally or some Alloys would be good. Please make your comments. I know that this is not a short Fleetside in original paint..... C10 short bed pickup, lowered, smoothies, new blackwall tyres, (not ones in pic, they were bolloxed) 350 chevy, offy inlet 4 barrel edelbrock carb, 4 speed manual on the floor, full stainless dual exhaust, heater, lovely condition, not mint but nice! drives superb, no power steering. has 57 chev steering wheel, mexican blanket, i think the seats were in good nick, this was my old truck, I threw a fortune at it, what on I cant remember, but I used it regular until I sold it to my mate who needs to shift it. phone him on ********* for more details, don't ask me anything, I'm just doing the ad for him, £8500.00 ono.(US $12800.00) thanks!! forgot to mention, has a new back bumper fitted as well since these pics were taken Remember, to land a truck on your driveway in the UK from the USA will cost around £2000.00 or about $3000.00

Re: Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
Looks pretty good to me Rian. But the price seems kinda high. For that price I would want the interior to be nice, upgraded to power disc brakes, and suspension updated. It still has the 6 lug wheels so I'm guessing it still has drum brakes since it still has manual steering. Maybe you could contact him and get some updated pics, since it says it has new rear bumper and smoothie wheels. Maybe some interior shots and engine shots.
I am partial to steppers. But if what you want is a fleetside all I can say is don't settle. Bret

Good to see you here. Trust all is good at home. I have been keeping a low profile, trying to get into and on with the new job.... How misserable are these trucks to drive without powers steering ? I know too little overall about these trucks to be able to make decent judgements, which is why I tend to ask many questions on here. Thanks for the advice, I do tend to agree with you, and Fleets continue to be my preference, though this one looked nice in these colours (Do not know if I really like the sating though)

I prefer long fleets but that is a nice looking stepside. Go check it out in person and low ball him if you like it. See how much he'll come down.

Since you are desiring a fleetside, I have to agree with C-10Cutty... Low ball him and if he doesn't come off the price much, you are still in the hunt for the right truck for your tastes! Just my two pennies!!! Cheers!

Going out on the motorbike on Sunday around 13.00 to look at it. Weather permitting. I do absolutely agree on lowball numbers as it leaves room to find a suitable Short Step loadbody and then sell on the Stepside. SWB is also Nicola's preference. Quote:
Yep, agreed. I still think that even with the hassle of self-importing the "Right truck" unseen, basing the decission on somebody looking at it on my behalf and possibly organizing things like new windscreens, wheels or even a V8 and manual transmission transplant, from the States, the overall cost can beat what is available in the UK. I will send you a PM in a moment as well. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
Thats a nice looking step side fella, I like it. It's around the going rate for trucks over here in 'blighty' too.... Mine was advertised for £7.5k (I got it for a fair bit less) but then mine does have £2k worth of new(ish) airbag suspension and chrome smoothies...
Mine doesn't have power steering and its a breeze to drive over here on our roads, the steering is nice and light the only thing is the number of turns needed on the steering wheel to get it to turn! I have no problems at all with mine not having power steering.... i am used to old VW campers though...... I say its a bloody nice looking truck and is priced 'fairly' for over here, as others have said make him a low ball offer al he can say is no..... but you never know your luck. FUnnily enough that the colour my other half wants to paint mine!

It was actually the paint that drew me in on that Stepside. However, I do have a thing for a Fleetside in the 60-66 shape. That said........ Take a look at this truck over in the USA that completely screwed my head about. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2512828429...84.m1423.l2649 I really like it, and think the price could still have it land here at a fair UK cost..... however, it is over my budget.

The '59 looks nice in the photos. If you still desire a short fleet then keep looking, one will turn up. It just takes time. Good luck on your search.

Re: Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
the bed and interior look nice. I like the steering wheel too. Even has a Mexican blanket. lol. Im with the others on this. LOW BALL him, even lower than you feel comfortable asking for. He will counter (hopefully). Before that go thru it and pick it apart. " it doesnt have power steering, it isnt a fleetside, it isnt automatic..etc"
You can always buy it and swap the bed out at a later date. |

Re: Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
I believe the truck has sold, which is a good thing.
It will allow me to look for my personal ideal truck, which is a Short Fleetside with loads of chrome. Looking on Ebay and elsewhere, including some Craigslist ads. If anyone sees something that fits, please let me know on here or by PM. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Reasons to buy or not to buy a 66 Short stepper ?
Regarding your question about the difficulty of steering without power assist; to put it in terms that we both may find familiar, I find my truck steers slightly easier without power assist than my 1978 MGB. The trucks large steering wheel and relatively light weight (compared to modern examples) makes them fairly easy to steer.
