Old school brake spring stretchers have a round on one handle end that lets you compress and turn the 1/4 turn in one motion with one hand so you can hold the pin head from behind with the other hand.

That round end on the tool shown is for removing and replacing the return springs. This is the tool you use on the hold down springs. This is from Summit and well worth the $12.97 price the first brake job.
