Got the new AC all hooked up, oiled, vaccumed and charged with R12 last Sunday. It gets down to 40deg and it was 96 outside that day

Re: R12 is wonderful
When I first got my truck the r12 unit would blow 35*! I have an extra gallon of freon to put into whatever project next. You can even buy it on eBay

Re: R12 is wonderful
I almost wish we would have kept ours R12, we used to get down to 32° or so, but when they mentioned that r12 was going to disappear forever and "Freon" would be so scarce and expensive we converted brownie to R134A. this was what about 93 or 94 when they did that?
Now i'm lucky to get 58°, but did snag a 5th can to run in it (the system was completely empty) |

Re: R12 is wonderful
R12 is wonderful, but I cannot complain about my "did it myself" ac rebuild and R134 conversion. I get 42 degrees out the center vent on the hottest of MI days (85 plus). I replaced every single ac component, vacuumed myself, and charged. Spent over'$500 but worth it and enjoyed the how to project. Many thanks to this site for how to do instructions. Yes I have to hear the teasing about how ugly my old truck is,but she runs and cools great....not my daily driver

Re: R12 is wonderful
Thanks guys, I was on pins and needles while working on this, had everything on for months except dryer waiting for this day. We put in 10oz 525 oil, 3oz here, 1oz here etc per the GM service manual. Then hooked up vacuum pump and it held so we vacuumed to remove moisture and added 3lbs 12 oz of R12 all per manual and dang if she didn't cool great.....I am so happy because as I said its hitting 96 already and with heat index its 105 in shade

Re: R12 is wonderful
I can still do 12 if i evacuate the 134 out of the system IIRC the "Conversion" was the removal of a filter and an adaptor sleeve on the high side.
What i don't get is my 06 gets right cold on the 134 the old systems i guess were designed to optimally run with 12. That being said you can use the new 134A adapter on a pressure gauge with a hose to test the fuel pressure on your 00-06 |

Re: R12 is wonderful
I asked about how well the R134A conversions are and was told our trucks (my 86' anyways) is a good candidate for conversion and works well.
Now R134A isn't just a drop in, and it is finnicky about being over and undercharged. Also the pressures are different so the cycling switch may need adjusting. Here's my thread on it over at Aircondition.com Still trying to find the time to do it. Too many little issues being taken care of first. For those with lackluster R134A conversion performance - what did you do for your conversion?

Re: R12 is wonderful
Make me remember back 19 or 20 years... i seem to recall we replaced the pump up on the top right of the motor, hooked it back into the condenser, then the lower connection we unhooked removed the filter, refilled with 134 and that was it.
At that time i was in the position of hand tools over to Dad. I have one more can of 134 i'll try in it this weekend, because the system hasn't changed all that much to get the pressure just right and hope i don't have any leaks. I put 46 oz in and if i'm reading the sticker right it takes from 3 to 5 lbs 48 to 80 oz of coolant, then i read on another forum that 134A you should use 85% of what you would of R12. I know the pressure gauge was about 40 lbs. after adding the 4th can and the compressor was on constantly. |
