Why would you not want gas shocks?

The gas in shocks in nitrogen, used for its stability.
Who told you not to buy gas shocks?
Good luck in finding some...
Are you sure they didn't say not to buy air shocks?

Re: are bilstein 5100 gas shocks? i was told not to buy gas making sure

I think you are crossing terms. Lots of old-timers call air shocks "gas shocks". You don't want those. They provide extra spring force with an internal air spring. They are usually either short lived or have to be refilled often. When they first came out they were used like hydraulic bump stops are used today.

But today the term "gas shock" refers to the fact that good shocks have a relatively low pressure (85psi) nitrogen charge in a separate chamber that keeps the oil from foaming. All modern performance shocks have this feature. Although a shock can work without the nitrogen, it will not work for long before the oil foams and has greatly reduced damping effect.

Here's a quote from IDP's page. A Volvo specialist that is know for their suspensions.

Quote:
Many shock absorbers contain pressurized nitrogen gas in them as well as the hydraulic oil. If a shock has to react very rapidly to an up and down motion the hydraulic oil can start to foam. This foam causes the shock to lose some of its control. The purpose of the gas in the shock is to keep the oil under pressure so it is less likely to foam. This is the same reason a can of soda that has been shaken is still a liquid until you pop the top. The foam doesn’t start until the pressure is released.
FWIW, road racing suspension is what I do professionally

the nitrogen is to prevent cavitation. you see the same thing used one dirtbikes and bicycles that take some pretty extreme abuse

it's single up front I just want a nice ride going with a 3" lift it's made by tuff country like the above poster put on his 91 jimmy and in that video thread i posted that bad azz truck says it has a 3" lift on it.

so you guys tell me bilstein 5100s or the rancho's? you all have probably been there done that so i value your op's and will listen to them.

I would assume the ran his are cheaper than bilsteins and are adjustable like they said above.

Rear shocks are softer valves as well so that may be worth looking into. Maybe try looking at pirate 4x4? Or suspension sub forum.
