as was said the cracks are where the knurled part of the bolt goes into the block.. not where the threads where..

Id bet dollars to donut holes that what happened was your starter kicked back HARD once or twice and tried bending that bolt in the block.. IF you had the OEM starter strap on the other end of the block installed, this would have never happened. Its not that bad, get some new starter bolts, a new starter, (high quality) and that strap which should be available at the dealer, and RUN it! Fix it when you rebuild the engine, not now..

Heres one of those starter braces. I run one and recommend you do too.. it bolts to that long peice of all thread thats on the back of that starter motor, and goes up to the engine block where there is a threaded hole..

I don't have a brace like that. Was it not used on our trucks, or did they all just get thrown away like so many other parts?

Never underestimate the uses for JB weld!

easiest maybe not the cheapest fix is to go with an aftermarket high torque starter they bolt in the straight across so use the other hole and go have done this before

the outer hole is used for both staggered and straight

I talked to a guy today who owns aenginerring fabrication shop. He does alot of work for shops and weld tranny cases and blocks quite frequently. He says that he has never had one crack again once welded that he knows of.

First decide how the bolt hole is affected by crack. Get some 3/8 X 16 grade 5 all thread. Test hole for good threads. Make a long stud from all thread and lock tite in place. Use a few good hard washers with a nylock nut. This will give many years of service...... Frank
