The tap and die sets come with a hand tool for them that you turn to put them in, although I guess you could use anything that'd turn them, just be careful not to go too fast and strip it back out.

t-handle

"buy the tool",,,,,,,,,,,people have used crecent wrenches to tap holes, and ive seen them break the tap ,,,,pay the $15.00 and save yourself some possible problems........use oil on the tap,go 1 full turn, then back out 1/4 turn,go 1 full turn ,back out 1/4,,,,,till you get the depth you want jeff,,,,

Ok I got the tap wrench. How much oil should I use on the tap just enough to coat it once?

Thanks

tapping

Do it like jef5150 said and use a cutting oil if you can get it.If you can't get cutting oil use something light like machine oil.If you don't back the tap out to "break" the chip, you will surely break the tap in the hole and will be in worse shape than you are now.Oh yeah, try to keep the tap as straight as you can while tapping,do not assume it will follow the hole,I speak from experience
