1968 Chevy Pick Up Brakes
Hello, My name is John. New to this site. I have a 68 pick up. I,ve had 3 other 68 pick ups. So I know a little somthing about them. But their is a lot I don,t know. So I,ll have more questions than answers. But have will have a few answers.
All the trucks I,ve had. And the one now are C-10. So this is my 1st issue. Years ago when I would buy brake shoes. Thier were two sizes. I had always needed the smaller kind. I never knew why thier were two sizes. I figure that perhaps the larger size were for a C-20. On the truck I have now they are the smaller size. But I want to change to a bigger brake. And their is another issue. I have rally wheels on this truck. And my lug nuts keep braking. And I think it is because of the rally wheels. I have a 6 lug wheel with 7/16" lugs. So I want to change to a bigger and stronger wheel with 1/2" lugs. And use the wider brake shoes. Now is my thinking correct if I get front wheels and drums off a C-20. And put them on my C-10. Will they fit right on. And do the C-20s have the 1/2" lugs? |

Are you breaking lug nuts? or studs? Maybe just put new studs in and buy new lug nuts. Must be a reason for them to keep breaking, are they original (40+ years old)?? There is only one size of brake shoes on my local auto parts website so not sure there. The only reason I can think of for different brake shoes would be C10/20 and different rear ends. I know some parts stores ask a billion questions that don't apply to the vehicle you're working on so maybe thats where you're getting two different sizes from. 67-70 lugs are 7/16-20 6 lug and 71+ are 1/2 -20 disk brakes. Original wheels,lugs, and nuts should do just fine in proper condition.

Might be thinking about the HD JM1 brakes offered on C10 Suburbans and Panels. They bumped the front drum brakes from 11x2 to 11x 2.75. If it were me I'd just stay with the more common stock brakes with premium shoes and add a booster if you don't have one. Bumping up to C20 parts is also going to change to an 8-lug so think about that before jumping on that. Generally wheel studs break for one of three reasons, too tight, too loose or an aftermarket wheel with a thick non-flexing center.

forget the drums...not worth the effort...just go stock discs with junkyard parts...complete breakdowns of what you need on suspension forums

Well, I am thinking about discs on the front. And the stud braking thing. The other 3 68 trucks I had. All had the stock wheels. Never broke a stud. On this truck with the rallys. I use more studs than gas. LOL.
I get about one stud a 100 miles. I'll pull in the gas station. Give me 4 studs. And check the gas. |

Only reason I can think of is that your bearings could be shot and there overheating your studs causing them to snap, take it for a good drive and when you stop off feel your wheel, if its hot to the touch your gonna most likely need new bearings or possibly your brakes are binding up in the front
