VIN help please!

I FINALLY saved the money to get my truck transferred over to Fl from Ga. I went into the tag office with EVERYTHING I needed. When she took my Ga title out to compare it to the VIN plate on the door sill, there is one number and one letter that does not match.. What the HECK?! Here is my question. Where else should the VIN number be printed on my truck. If it ever was, it is no longer on the dash.

Thanks !!

Re: VIN help please!

I know that many VIN,s from old vehicles don't "conform" to the current DMV VIN criteria....maybe Ga added some characters to bring it into compliance? I would start with contacting Ga DMV.

Re: VIN help please!

should be on the top of the drivers side frame around the area the ps pump is, as long as the frame is oe to the cab it will match the cab numbers

Re: VIN help please!

slow-1 that's what Im thinking, but try to convince the tag office of that.

c10, I looked and even stripped the paint off the frame by the pump and cannot see anything. That I know of, it has never had a frame off.

Re: VIN help please!

could be a mistake on dmv's end......it happened to me. and lucky for me i caught it now while the truck is new to me, rather than a few years down the road.

bought my truck a few months back and after i filled out the "new owner" info, they mailed me my pink. I have had some problems with getting it registered. Long story short, DMV changed a "Z" in my vin to a "2".

so now i have to bring the truck down to dmv on friday and have them look at my vin # to verify before they can correct it and send me a new title.

good luck with your truck!

Re: VIN help please!

Jerry, that's exactly what Im having to do. The main lady at the tag office is supercool. I have to meet with her personally next week . She called me back and I told her that I didn't know if it mattered or not, but that I still have the original SPID sticker on the inside of the glove box. She said to go ahead and look closer to see if I can find the VIN stamp on the frame, if not we will see if we can make the SPID work. Keeping fingers crossed!!! Thanks darlings!!!!

Re: VIN help please!

I believe the ones the frame horns is only a partial vin so that really wouldnt help. My 70 k5 has a partial on each side of the front frame.

Re: VIN help please!

Generally they are the plant code and the unit serial number (the last seven) IIRC. Bruceman1968 will know!

What are the two different characters? You can use the decoder linked in my signature to breakdown what you have for both the VIN code and the model code.

On the frame should be the last 8 digits of the vin.
A VIN of CS148S100001 will be
8S100001 on the frame.
Some frames did NOT get stamped, and some are 1 number off.

Here is where you should find the stamp. If you don't have a partical here, then there probably isn't one under the cab either. (check anyway)

Re: VIN help please!

Junkie, Match the door VIN plate number to the SPID VIN number and take a pic of both. If they are exactly the same then, The title is off probably from the georiga DMV. I don't think you will have to much trouble getting the title changed to what it should be.
If you need to look for the parcial vin under the cab, use a dental mirror to see it.

Re: VIN help please!

On my truck, the VIN that is stamped into the top of the left side rail is beneath the cab.....If yours is there, it's gonna be tough to see without a left-handed corkscrew mirror camera....and a double-jointed neck on top of your shoulders...

Re: VIN help please!

Gmc Junkie, I must of had a brain freeze. I gave you info for a Chevy truck frame and forgot that you have a GMC. Sorry about that. Lot's of GMC's did NOT get a frame VIN stamp. So it's not unusual for a GMC to be missing the frame Vin stamp. Some GMC's do have a frame vin stamp, but not all. I haven't seen enough GMC frame Vin stamps to tell you what should be there, but it's not uncommon for a GMC to be missing the frame Vin stamp.
Also you might want to call the SPID a "Data Plate" when you talk to the DMV person. Data Plate sounds more permanent and official than SPID does. The SPID is called a Data Plate (general term) by GM, because anything with data on it, that is permanently affixed to the vehicle is called a Data Plate, whether it's paper or metal.

I have also been curious as to what two digits are off. GMC VIN's did vary, from year to year and then also had destination codes (one digit) in the middle sometimes. If you check the Vin Number link in my sig, you will find that I have researched the GMC VIN's a lot and if you want you can PM me the Vin Number on the door plate VIN, and the VIN from your title and I will be happy to decode them and come up with a educated guess as to why their off.

Hope this helps, and please let us know how you make out with this.

Re: VIN help please!

3 things to verify matching numbers - Frame, vin plate and spid sticker = title.

Thought, If you have a friend that is a police officer, notory, they can sign off on the verfication form...

Re: VIN help please!

Ok, I have looked on the frame, razored 19 hundred layers of paint off and I see no gosh darn numbers. The numbers on the SPID, or Data plate match the door plate perfectly. The numbers were changed when I registered in Ga from CA. I don't know the meaning of their madness but it has totally messed me up. Ga changed a 2 to a Z and added a 7 right in the middle of the number. The lady I talked to that is the head person in the tag office seems really cool. She has been out of town. As soon as she gets back, I can take it to her and she will most likely sign off on it. Just a big bunch of hassle. Ill update as soon as I can get an appt. with her, I appreciate yalls help. I just couldn't do stuff without yall!! THANK YOU!!

Post Re: VIN help please!

You're in luck ! .

What you need is called a " Title Correction " and since she mentioned it , just keep your mouth shut and she'll handle it .

My '69 C/10 doesn't appear to have a frame stamp (dammit) and so far , none of the junkyard ones I've found do either .

This bring up the need to always CHECK your documents and when there's a wrong , missing or additional digit , just go to the DMV and 8politely* mention they made an error and you'd like to get it fixed please .

Doing this in the State it's currently registered to you in , is the simplest way to go , even if you're planning to move or sell it~ having correct , matching title and reggie , protects YOU and $aves $ in the long run , every time .

Re: VIN help please!

California and the deep south are different planets. This comes from a former California girl. The lady never mentioned anything about a "Title Correction". The numbers on the title don't match any number that I can provide.. She has to have concrete evidence that the error is only on the title (human error), and not because someone is trying to pull something illegal, ie numbers on the frame.

Re: VIN help please!

GMC Junkie, I think your next trip to the DMV will be a breeze. No problem at all.
The 2 that was changed to a Z, must of been the 3rd digit of your VIN. That's the GVW Range spot. There are no GVW Range codes that are a letter. They are all numbers. This can be easily documented.
On the 7, since it is NOT on the Vin plate or the SPID, and with the other error you won't have any trouble showing them that it,s a error on the title Also it would make the serial number part of the vin 6 numbers long, and all the serial numbers (for a 71 GMC, USA Built) were only 5 numbers long. Also easily documented.
Here is a decoder for your 71 GMC. Which by the way is absolutely stunning. love the color, and I still can't believe it climbed that hill at the Arches.

Might help the DMV see why the title has to be wrong.

Funny how that decoder page turned out a 71 K1500 Suburban by chance... There was a reason for our choices there Bruce!

Re: VIN help please!

Bruceman, that diagram makes sense. The only thing that was changed on mine was, on my truck, there is a Z where indicated on the diagram, Ga tag office changed that Z to a number 7. The lady was supposed to call me back today if she got any information from HER supervisor. Havent heard from her yet. Thanks so much everyone for your help. Ill update as soon as I can get some info.

take care

Re: VIN help please!

Ok, so you have a 7 in the assembly plant spot. It is easy to document that NO assy plant had a code of 7, so it should be easy for them to see that a human error was made on the title. Good luck Junky, I'm sure it will work out fine.
