Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

yeah the suspense has been very hard to take...i kept it in a barn till now. bought 15 yrs ago with big plans then life happened it has a 350/th350 a friend is going to help me make a reliable everyday driver out of it. i want swap the rear end out so i can get a higher gear ratio for gas milage and to convert to 5 lug. so if any one has done this any info on exactly what yr i should use to make swap would be great appreciated... more pics will follow as i go along... thanks to all

Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

71/72 C10 if you can find one, those have coils and are 12 bolt 5 lugs. Otherwise, just swap out your axles to 5 lug and rebuild your diff to a more friendly ratio

Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

Welcome to the forum !!!

71 was the first year for the 5 lug disc brakes and are basically the same all the way to the mid 80's. In 81 there was also a *light duty* rotor introduced which was 1" think were the 71-80 was a 1.25" thick rotor. They are now usually called the LD (light duty 1") rotor and the HD (1.25" heavy duty) rotor.

You can run a newer spindle (either stock or aftermarket dropped spindle) on your older truck with a ball joint swap and/or a tie rod end swap, depending on the year of the spindle you choose.

Here's some info on just that swap ...

Welcome to the forum

That's a good looking truck. Did you do the body and paint yourself, or did you have it done?

There are links to many threads that will answer your questions, located in the 60-'66 FAQ index, found at the top of the page.

Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

i bought the truck just as it is 15yrs ago and have not done a singal thing to it. 15yrs ago i bought it 75 miles from where i live and drove it about a quarter of the way home and it quit running, had to haul it rest of way home. come to find out the gas had been in it so long it had geled and gummed everything up. hasnt hit a lick since but all that is about to change

i have been trying to figure out what gears are in rear end.. i jacked it up and have both wheels in air...grabed one and turned it and the oppisite side turned the other way so i marked tire and then counted how many revolutions on driveshaft to turn wheel over one time which came out to be 3.75 so i figure they where 3.73's. but then igrabed wheel once again and truned it and that time the other wheel did not even turn....so not sure if what i did will work to tell me what i got? any advice from anyone would be great.

Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

not sure if i should keep rearend i got and change from th350 to a 700r4. but i really want to change over to 5 lug so been thinking of trying to find donor truck cheap and just swap rearend and frontend out and use mastercylinder and column from donor...or just swap reared keep th350 and buy a conversion kit for front, but if i go that route then im stuck trying to piece power steering together...so many diff routes any advice from someone who has already done it....help

I don't know if I could have not fooled with it in 15 years, you got more patience than I, of course having said that, I'm on my 13 year.

Re: newbie to forum. heres my ride

Keep looking and reading on this forum and you will find any info you need, or post your questions. Captainfab is a guy to stay in touch with he has good fair priced products that will help you out and lots of knowledge available from everyone here. If your front suspension and steering is good you can just change the spindles and buy a set of rotors and calipers. There are some direct fit spindles out there, stock or dropped. 700r is not a bad way to go but you will get into drive shaft modification too. Good luck!
