Question 71 GMC 1 Ton Dually Rear Axle

My 71 GMC 1 Ton 7200 lb axle is tossing rear end 90w all over the brakes on the right side. I've had the hub seal replaced but it's just not sealing. Now what do I do? ... Replace the rear end?

I've put about 65-75 miles on it since I had the hub seal replaced and it's just as bad as before the seal was replaced.

If I need to replace the axle does anyone have a source for a rebuilt one?

see if u can buy a stemco seal for it
the axle stub where the seal rides probably is scored the stemco seal comes with a wear sleeve that u put over the stub where the seal rides. this should cure your problem

Dean23,

Thanks, I found the Stemco web site and it looks like their Grit Guard #392-9063 is the one I need. I'll give them a call and see if they have a distributor in my area for it.

Your next choice is to have a 73+ 1 ton dually rear installed. If you take a look at your drums and find they are worn out or if this sleeve doesn't work, you will have to do that anyway. Just try and find a good set of drums for a Eaton/Corp rear 31 years after production stopped.

da-burb is right belives me it's hard to find a good drum after 31 years...here you have to have 1 ton duallies here inspected every year to keep them on the road or there considered not road worthy and they wont give you license plates or insurance ........so your sidelined till you find a good drum if it dosen't measure within tolerances. Its a big fear I have with my tow truck.. what happens when my drums dont pass.......well I have it figured out as we have some aircraft industry here and they as well as some machine shops have a metal spray ( flamespray) process that will layer a little thickness to the drum and then you can cut it to nominal size.

Re: 71 GMC 1 Ton Dually Rear Axle

I have a problem, I am trying to remove 73 GMC 1 Ton Drum Brakes in the rear, And I can not get them to budge. I have tried everything. I noticed there is a weird ring where the axle sits within the the axle case. I don't know if I should tap it out or leave it there. The Brakes on this truck have never been changed. It should be a 3/4 ton, however, the 1 ton was put there so I could haul 5th Wheel's and other Goose neck trailers.
