Dana 60 - Is it a Posi or not?
I just picked up a Dana 60 at a junkyard out of a 1970 GMC 3/4 ton. It listed "maximum traction rear axle" on the SPID. This is Chevy's version of "power lock rear axle". How can you visibly tell if it is a posi? I took the inspection plate off and couldn't really tell. It had some blocks between the spider gears but no clutches. Thanks.

Re: Dana 60 - Is it a Posi or not?
If both axles turn in the same direction it is a posi.

That looks like a powerlock and it should have clutches inside. They are hard to see but they are there.

Definitely a power-loc. One of the achilles heel of the unit is the long bolts on the right hand side. Pull the cap off and check the bolts for being tight. I think torque is 50 lbs and the cap is (I think) 65-70

Re: Dana 60 - Is it a Posi or not?
Thanks for the help guys! Well, I just did a lot of work for nothing. I've got a '69 GMC Custom Camper that I put the posi rear in. Pretty nicely optioned truck with 396, TH400, A/C, aux. battery, etc... but no posi on the SPID. The picture above is actually the rear I just pulled out of the '69. The '70 rear I installed looked identical to this one so I wasn't sure if they were both open or both Power Lock. On the bright side, I've got a desirable axle for sale!!
