Gas spill on fill ups

Is there a way to keep from spilling gas on fill ups? I do my best when its almost full to go slow..

Is it the design of the fill necks and the newer style pumps that cause this?

Is there a permanent way to avoid this issue?

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

I pull nozzle flange about 2 inches from fill neck and slow fill rate when near full.

Back in the day, leaded gas nozzle was fatter and you could fill faster w/o spillage.
I don't know if auto shut-off trigger changed w/ modern nozzle?

If you invent a slip in fill neck orifice to accommodate unleaded nozzle I'll buy one

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

My 64 did better with the filler neck sticking out of the cab about 1.5 to 2 inches. Most times it would auto off w/o spurting but I always made sure the flap was against the filler neck and slowed down a bit near full.

On the new 65 it'll squirt gas out the neck every time...ya gotta stand there hands on and manage it every second!

On 66 you will often get spurt out when nozzle flap is touching tank neck.

You got to go deep! If I let it sit there it will spill, hold handle up and nozzle down and the plastic spring pulled up all the way.

You just have to hold your mouth just right; lol.
Nozzles vary between stations especially across state line.
I've got the hang of it at my normal stations.
Sometimes the go deep causes a big fuel spew on the 66.

That's another reason I moved my tank out back. Don't care for the gas smell.

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

I wonder if a portion of a later model fill neck would solve that issue. One with a smaller hole down in it.

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

I know moms Trailblazer spits if you don't hold the nozzle down. With the nozzle down and in the gas shuts off sooner. Or try slow filling. My gas gauge is a tap on the tank. That plastic cover kills me. My diesel doesn't have trap door, open like old school, so that's not helping your issue.

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

I'm assuming you have a standard behind the seat tank? if so I know what you mean i always have a run down the tank. Wasn't till recently when i took time to investigate, did i figure out why.

First. when you fill your tank on auto, the hole is to big for the nozzle so the nozzle tends to angle in an upward direction. Also most nozzles have a hole about 1 inch from the end. not sure why but its come to my attention that gas coming out of this hole will run down the nozzle and fill up in the Vapor lock rubber on the back of the nozzle. If you only put a couple gallons in usually not enough gas to make a big mess. but when you fill all 20 gals up on your truck that sucker fills up.

"

Note : newer cars have a small door flap that is just the right size for this nozzle and that is why it never happens on them.

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

Yes, I still have the tank behind the seat. I always tip the nozzle up as far as I can and go slow when I know its getting full.. but...

I don't have an issues with it running down the tank inside the truck, the grommet is in good shape to catch that.

Re: Gas spill on fill ups

I wonder if a 1" long piece of the proper large diameter hose , could make a Fuel filler neck reducer sleeve . If you could sleeve the very top of the filler neck , while staying above the vent holes in the nozzle , I wonder if that would stop the kick back ?
