Gas tank size

For those of you that have custom gas tanks and your truck is a weekend cruiser, how many gallons does your tank fit? I want to get a spun aluminum tank and I'm going to recess it in the bed floor. I can fit one that is about 12 gallons, but I could have it modified (more$$) to hold more. I just don't want to be sorry i got too small of a tank, but on the other hand, I don't want to spend money unnecessarily on modifying the tank. Thought?

Thanks,
Josh

Re: Gas tank size

I know of some that have used a stock Blazer tank and put it in the rear of the truck(frame). Not quite sure what size that is but I am sure its bigger than 12 gallons !!!

Re: Gas tank size

Mine is 40 gallons. Steel aftermarket out of my Blazer. Has Long bolts that go all the way through the middle to bolt it straight to the bed floor. Also put the filler neck from the Blazer in the bed side. Mine is a 4x4 work truck and will see it's share of stump pulling.

Re: Gas tank size

I have a Home made 19 gal tank under bed behind my rear axle and get 17-18 mpg street and highway driving with my 6.0 Lq9. What size motor and what is or will your gas mileage be? How many miles do you want to be able to drive between fill ups?

Those are the million dollar questions. I really don't know what kind of trips this truck will see, which might be a good reason to err on the side of caution and go bigger with the tank. Engine as of now is going to be a carb'ed 350.

I can't remember anybody ever saying: "Gee, I wish my gas tank was smaller".

Boyd's tank. 18 gallon welded aluminum that fits at the rear.

Re: Gas tank size

Please pardon my hijack. Can I install a rear tank with a class IV hitch? I need a second tank for pulling my trailer and I am queasy about putting one under my toolbox although I did find a really nice in-bed tank. I haven't bought it yet. At $950, other projects keep getting in the way.

That said, with a 12 gallon tank, I'd be losing my mind. I whine incessantly about my 20 gal.

I put as big a tank as would fit and not hang down below the rear roll pan. I will post some pics later,

Re: Gas tank size

I took the sender off of the
Stock unit cut it off. Ground a slit in the back of the tube. Speed it apart and welded it to a silver ado pump unit I put in the ta k for an ls install

Re: Gas tank size

Dealer option Aux tanks FTW. Got lucky and mine just needed a little clean up and fresh hoses. Seems to start a little harder on the Aux tanks when the fuel is low but I think that is due to how low the fuel sits and gravity. First fill up took 16 gallons each if I remember right. Glad to have them as I average 8 mpg without a trailer and plan on hauling with this.

Re: Gas tank size

Now I would love to get my hands of some of those and for the same reasons, too. I am tempted by the in bed tanks but I have an 8' bed for a reason. My toolbox already irritates me with the space I lose but the tank/toolbox kits are redonkulously expensive.

Re: Gas tank size

i just have a drivers side saddle tank like the ones above. Its probably way to small but I wont drive this much and gas would just go bad anyway.

Re: Gas tank size

If I were to ever have my way, I'd like to leave my in cab tank, hang one on the left saddle and if I were to still need more, a blazer tank. The right saddle I would like to hang a battery bank and use a single big battery from a semi tractor.
