Welcome to the board! Try disconnecting the ignition, and then rolling the motor over with the starter. If it rolls over normally, it's not a starter problem, but an ignition problem instead. Make sure all of your cable, and battery connections are clean. Good luck.

How hot is it getting? My wife had a 65 Mustang that used to do this, turned out to be a cooling problem. The radiator cap wasn't holding enough pressure, and as soon as she turned it off it would over heat. Cold starting was fine.

You running headers? They sometimes have the tendency to do that. You may just need some header-wrap or a heat shield.

My 68 burb did that when I first got it. I ended up discovering that I had the timing advanced a little too much. When it was cold, no problem, but hot, forget it.

Mine was doing something similar. It had a new starter and soleniod and cables. I ended up getting an Optima red top battery (the battery that was in there was new, but it was a Costco battery) and the problem was solved and never came back again.

I've always timed my Chevy V8's by advancing them until they either A) start to detonate (ping) and/or B) are hard to start when hot. Sure, I could set 'em to what the book says, but every engine is different. I've had some that would let me get away with 14 degrees and others that wouldn't take more than 10. Either way, I'll be a gen-u-wine dollar bill that's the problem.

When I worked at the Chevy dealer , many years ago. This was a
common problem. Gm had a heat shield we used to put on that goes around the solenoid. I don't know if they're still available or not?
