84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
I found a somewhat clean but tragically neglected Sierra Classic and now I need to do something with it.
This is my first post and build thread, but I have read more on this site than I care to admit. Hopefully I can keep some interest because: A. It's turned into a frame off B. I've already maxed out my credit card, but I have more C. It was and will remain "brown" D. It will be my daily driver E. Can you say 6.0 L96 with 6l90? F. Trailing arm conversion with 12 bolt G. open to suggestions and comments on where to take the build I will explore the photo adding this evening. But here are some quickies |

Re: 84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
The plan as it stands....
6.0 LS (l96) swap with six speed auto 6l90 Current performance harness and base tuning Trailing arm conversion - CPP's kit - 12 bolt with 5 lug 3.42 gear with a truetrac tubular control arms top and bottom - CPP with their modular spindles 3" static drop in the front to start - 2" from the spindles 1" drop springs -CPP 4" static drop in the back - 4" drop springs with trailing arms so no blocks at this time 315/35R20 rear 28.7 diameter, 11" rim width 275/40R20 front 28.7 diameter, 9.5" rim width hydroboost conversion - the motor came with the hydroboost so why not use it? Gen IV vintage air - not the original plan but I found the case of the original AC cracked from a previous engine swap and then after dissecting the electrical harness and cables from the under the dash I think it would be better to get rid of the stock system. Kore3 C6 Z06 brakes with Red calipers and the GM drilled rotors - crazy expensive but nothing gets attention like bright red 6 piston calipers with "corvette" stenciled on them Here is how it all started.... I saw an ad on Craigslist for an 87' GMC SWB... turned out it was an 84. The owner didn't even know what year it was. The last two of the vin were 87 so that is what he thought it was. He had lost the title.... Last edited by mscles; 07-09-2013 at 11:07 PM. |

Re: 84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
Even though it wasn't an 87, I still took it off his hands. $1,200 so I thought it was a good deal. Turns out it had $400 in fees to catch up the reg and put it on Non-op....
I have always had a soft spot for the brown and tan color combo's. The original color is called Indian Bronze. I would like to keep the styling with a newer brown/bronze metallic with the Saddle Tan accents. I even like the original style body molding - as long it is razor straight 1st thing - found out my rust free truck was not so perfect... The passenger fender had been hit and repaired but the extent of the damage was hidden by the inner wheel well and had extensive rust in it. The drivers fender had a slight hit in front - still very useable but not perfect. |

Craigslist to the rescue!
Complete 91' burban clip for a measly $350 with hood and cowl and a few amenities... |

Re: 84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
Since I had decided to do the 91 frontend swap (with the GMC grill of course)
I figured I should pull the front clip as a single piece. Much easier to work on the engine right? The original engine is a 305 with a 700r4 combo. Turns out that the motor had more than just a few loose header bolts... it also does not pass visual inspection in CA since the smog pump and exhaust manifolds with air injection lines, EGR, and carb have been changed or removed. It also has a leaking head gasket or burnt valves.... It runs but not real well.... I started pricing crate motors but I would still have to find all the correct smog equipment..... Than I found the "fred" build thread and Dennis's LS swap Suddenly I needed an LS. Last edited by mscles; 07-09-2013 at 11:30 PM. |

Re: 84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
I just remembered a little trivia and have to share.
See the 91 burb clip above? It is FAMOUS! Let me explain.... (only in LA) This clip came off a burb that was dismantled at a shop next to a company that preps and builds cars for the big movie studios. In the Movie - FAST and FURIOUS V (5), the Bank vault that they were dragging around - was really a 91 burb chassis with a "vault" constructed around it for a few of the shots... Guess which 91' burb chassis that was? True story, |

Front suspension shots:
I'm thinking this is the stock spring but don't know for sure. Can anyone identify these spindles? They have 1" rotors and are in good condition. I would have re-used them if they had been the thicker rotor design. |

Re: 84 Sierra Classic frame off pro-touring build
I figured since i'm not using any of it, I didn't even bother to separate the spindles from the arms and brakes, just took the whole package out at once
