t-5 swap
has anyone done a 5 or 6 speed swap. My truck is a 77 with a 327 and a 4 speed

I've got a t56 I'm waiting for my exhaust to get done and finish putting my front end together since I did a motor swap and a round eye swap at the same time. The t56 will an insane amount of power. That being said on a big flat truck it'll need a good amount to be able to use the. .5:1 6th gear ratio. That's why I researched and got the first Gen t56 1993 model only. It has a 1st gear better suited to a heavy truck plus a..62:1 6th gear. Still only be running 2200 rpm at 70 MPH with a 29"tire and 4.30:1 rear. Seems perfect to me the first Gen is rated for less power but still for like 450hp.
The t56 is by far....far....the more expensive swap. As for a t5 and a 327....get a wc t5 and unless its a damn stout 327 you'll prolly be OK. Unless its an earlier 327 from a go fast car or any from a vette odds are good its only a 235 HP motor by factory specs anyway. Posted via Mobile Device |

If you wanna use the T5 you need the shift linkage from a S10, and a Camaro WC T5.
I wouldn't mind a T5 in my truck, but I wouldn't be able to haul much of anything or tow with it. So if your truck is a glorified car it will be fine. |

I had a world class (WC) T5 out of a 90 Camaro in my 74 C10 for 7 years. Behind a stock 350. Worked excellent. I just saw one at pic-a-part last week. First one I seen there in 10 years. Anyway, I had bucket seats so the camaro shift location worked out perfect. No need to use anything S10. Thats all bS. I used everything from the camaro. Bellhousing (which mounts the trans turned at a 17degree angle) slave cylinder. I even used the stock 73-74 crossmember. Just slid it back and drilled new mounting holes in the frame. Shorter driveshaft. Great transmission as long as you don't drag race it. I put over 50k on mine and sold it to a dude who is driving it still.
Now I have a T56 from an LT1 Camaro. This is like the T5 only Much stronger, Shifts smoother mounts straight and has that extra gear (6th). Thing about the 93-97 fbody T56 is you need an aftermarket flywheel if you have a pre 86 motor. (2 piece rear main seal.) Later motor with one piece seal you can use the factory flywheer saving you a ton of money. In my case I was in a bind and needed it (the flywheel) as soon as possible so I got a Mcleod from Summit for $500.00! Ouch! Used my T5 driveshaft, a T5 clutch slave cylinder (it has a bleed screw) the stock T56 clutch hose (connected to slave with stock hose end. Cut master cylinder hose fitting off and replaced it with an areoquip AN-3 fitting. Then connected that to a Wilwood 3/4 master connected to my stock clutch pedal. Stock (used) camaro clutch. Electronic reverse lockout I wired to a floor mounted headlight dimmer switch that I mounted up high but where I could easily hit it with my left foot. Also mounted an LED in the guage cluster that lights when the reverse gate is open. Push the dimmer switch once and it opens the reverse, push it again and it closes. 3.70 rear end gear with a 28" tall tire and a stock 305 (holley 4160) pulls 6th no problem. At 2000rpm in 6th i'm doing 85mph. I may go with a taller rear tire just for looks to fill the fenderwell better and would probley need to go to a lower gear. 3.89 would be the lowest I would go. 4.30 with a .50 OD is crazy. Your driveshaft speed would be insane! Besides you don't need that low a gear IMO. So to wrap it up, I have installed both T5 and T56 in my personal trucks and they are both great transmissions. The T5 is alot harder to find also. They did not make very many V8 camaros with the 5 speed. Most all were automatics. The T5 uses an internal rail shifter. They don't have "shift linkage Doesn't have to be a world class (WC) camaro T5. A non world class will work. Its just not as strong or as durable.
