Brake question for 56 chevy 3/4 owners

HELLO THERE! I AM IN DESPERATE NEED, OF GETTING A BRAKE SETUP, FOR MY 56 CHEVY 3600 3/4 TON PICKUP TRUCK. MY WIFE AND I , BOUGHT THE TRUCK COUPLE WEEKS AGO FOR A STEAL OF $100! WE EVEN GOT THE TRUCK RUNNING THE SAME DAY. EVERYTHING WAS GOING SO SMOOTH....UNTIL THE BRAKES!
IT APPEARS, THAT SUPPLIERS DONT MAKE BRAKE CONVERSIONS FOR THE 3/4 TON TRUCKS! EVERYTHING IS AVAILABLE FOR 1/2 TON...NO 3/4 TON. FML!!!
MY QUESTION IS..WHAT ARE YOU GUYS (WHO HAVE THE SAME SERIES TRUCK) DOING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM -IS THERE ANYTHING NEWER THAT WOULD ADAPT? IF I GET A 1/2 TON 4-6" CHEVY DROP AXLE FROM SPEEDWAY, MADE FOR 1/2 TON TRUCK, CAN I JUST BUY A DISC CONVERSION KIT THEN..BUYING NEW SPINDLES ETC TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE. SAME QUESTION FOR THE REAR END.
IDEALLY, MY WIFE WANTS TO LOWER HER TRUCK AND GET BRAKES TO DRIVE THE THING! WE DONT WANT TO GO THRU THE WHOLE SWAPPING FRAME THING -THE ORIGINAL FRAME IS MINT.
ANY FEEDBACK TO GEAR ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!
-JOEL

PS. I HAVE PICS OF THE WRECKER IN THE WELCOME SECTION. CHECK IT OUT!!

Re: Brake question for 56 chevy 3/4 owners

Hey muscle,

I have a 50 3/4 so a little different but I feel your pain because there are few if any options for a straight disc brake conversion.

I rebuilt my stock brake set up and I'm pretty happy with the price and the result. They work fine for me.

In the future I would like IFS (haven't selected the brand as yet) with a disc brake set up and I will swap out the rear end for my highway friendly speeds.

Happy now though and she cruises along at 55 to 60 nicely and brakes well enough.

You guys are a little more spoiled for choice over there than we are in Australia. Use the search function in the forum re disc brake and rear end changes and you should find some ideas to get you started.

Just depends on if you must do the conversion now and if your wife will be happy with stock drums. Mine says she is fine with them and she can drive pretty well with appropriate drum brake planning!

Re: Brake question for 56 chevy 3/4 owners

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE..REALLY APPRECIATED! MY WIFE AND I, HAVE CONTINUED TO SEARCH FOR THE SOLUTION. WE ARE GOING TO JUST BY THE BRAKE SHOES AND WHEEL CYLINDERS...AND REUSE THE REST OF THE HARDWARE...AND BUY A MASTER CYLINDER BOOSTER (OR WHATEVER IT'S CALLED). I GUESS IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK WAY BETTER, THAN USING JUST THE DRUMS ALONE. FOR LOWERING...WE ARE GOING TO FLIP THE AXLES. IF WE WANT MORE, WE WILL USE BLOCKS.
THANKS AGAIN, FOR TAKING THE TIME, TO HELP A FELLOW CHEVY TRUCK OWNER OUT! THOUGHT THERE WOULD'VE BEEN MORE REPLIES TO THIS. OH WELL.....

Re: Brake question for 56 chevy 3/4 owners

I think there was a thread in the last couple of weeks about straight axle conversion to discs using some other make rear discs and calipers but I am too tired to try and find it. Search using the box above and 67-72 checked should turn it up...
