towing help on 71

Guys, my buddy just purchased a 71 C10 longbed thats not running. We need to tow it 60 miles to his house. Uhaul is saying a towing dolly will not work for this truck? Whats up with that?

His tow truck just for reference is a F250 diesel.

anyone towed one with a dolly? Thanks.

Re: towing help on 71

I think the problem is that towing a RWD vehicle with an automatic transmission, even if it's in neutral, can overheat the transmission since all kinds of gears and whatnot are still moving around in it, and the fluid is cycling through a radiator that isn't operating. I don't think it's as much of a concern with standard transmissions in neutral, but I may be wrong.

Rental companies require the driveshaft to be disconnected when towing a rear wheel drive vechicle with a tow dolly.

Any comments or insults will be appreciated!

Go with the car trailer. I pulled it with my Cherokee. Trailer brakes helped my poor jeep slow down. It worked...with an F250 should be even safer.

Re: towing help on 71

Even though you are towing only 60 Miles just make sure to pull the driveshaft out. You must do this even on a short trip. We have a dolly here at work and have pulled new trucks all over the place before we bought a flatbed. 4 bolts to pull the driveshaft which takes 5 minutes and go wherever you need to. Loading a non-running truck can be a trick on a dolly though. We used to have a winch mounted on ours to pull the truck up the ramps but a come along can work too if you have a place to anchor it to on that dolly. Or you might be able to just push it on there. Good luck.

Re: towing help on 71

I would pony up the extra coin for a trailer. I hate dollies and have seen a lot more failed trips than successful ones. The piece of mind would be worth it alone. I've seen fenders and doors damaged from turning too tight. Once I saw a truck and dolly on the side of the highway with the come-along all jacked up and a dude looking over the cliff. I thought that couldn't be good at all.

If you do use the dolly, disconnect the driveshaft from the rear end and just tie it up securely out of the way so you don't pour tranny fluid out. Unless you have a tranny plug.

Re: towing help on 71

as far as Uhaul was concerned, it was an S10, not a C10. The dolly was really not wide enough. The truck had one 235 and one 205 on it. The wheel with the 235 was seated in the dolly bucket but it pushed the 205 side out and up on the top. Not a big issue as the tie downs held it in place. It towed fine and we were able to push the truck onto the dolly with 4 people.
