Pretty much any other traction device would be better. Some are more harsh than others, but a spool is the worst.

I'm pretty sure they use them in circle track racing too. And i'm also sure they turn. Left iirc.
I'm not saying a locked rear diff is a good idea on the street.
I'm just pointing out a few facts
