Questions about transmission mount crossmember

After spending a couple hours getting rid of the sludge and the dirt off my 68 frame, I discovered that the transmission mount has been cut/modified (pretty crappy job if you ask me) by previous owners. I also heard that these mounts are different based on manual/automatic transmission.

My questions are:

1) What type of cross member is this (auto, manual transmission)?
2) Is this cross member structurally safe even though its been cut this way?
3) Should I just get a new/used one and where can I get one?

Thanks!

Re: Questions about transmission mount crossmember

That looks like a manual crossmember. Manuals, the bell housing mounts to the crossmember with rubber isolators through the large holes. Auto's mount in the center on a typical auto trans mount.

If that was mine, I would weld some new steel on it to reinforce it and keep on rocking. I wouldn't use it as-is.

Re: Questions about transmission mount crossmember

looks like some fool hacked it to get the clutch out easier...if you plan on an automatic conversion you don't need this xmember at all

Re: Questions about transmission mount crossmember

these also differ in shape and location between v8 and 6...a pic of the rails to show which holes its riveted to would help
