new tranny
i have a 74 gmc stepside and need to get rid of this 4 speed manual tranny. looking at having a local shop install a 700r or a th400. the th400 installed is $1300.. the 700r installed is $2700. im on a budget and have little time to do the install myself. what are the pros and cons of each. if you guys can which one is the better of the 2 in the long run. thanks appreciate ur help.

Re: new tranny
I guess it depends on what you are doing with the truck too.Do you do more highway driving or in town/city? The 700R would be better on the highway, but $1400.00 will buy a lot of gas too.I would look at putting in a A833 or maybe T5,keep the truck a standard plus you get the benefit of overdrive too....that would be my choice.

Your 4 speed is now 1 to 1 in 4th gear the 700r would be .700 to 1 in overdrive. But as Rubble said you could achieve the same overdrive with a manual trans too. I wouldn't go with the TH400. JMO |

the truck is used mostly around town. some freeway. just looking for the most bank for the buck. really leaning toward the 700r.

Re: new tranny
TH400 is 3 speed and final drive of 1:1 without lock up. TH700r4 is lockup and overdrive with a 0.70 final drive. If you plan to drive it a lot, the lockup and first gear of the 700 will make you happy especially in the mpg department. Th400 are pretty tough, I have one, but with a gear vendor OD behind it. In the long run if built right the 700 will be cheaper.

Re: new tranny
Ask the shop if you supply all the parts how much would it cost just in labor. The newer trucks in this body style had the 700r4 stock so getting all the swap parts from a junkyard would be easy.If you use a used trans look in to having it rebuilt too. Most trans shops its a lot cheaper if you drop one off and pick it up.
