questions about re finishing old parts
so i just bought my truck a few weeks ago...a 69 shortbed. Ive got the entire front end apart so i could get to the radiator support which im going to replace. However all the other parts like the grille brackets, hood latch, inner fenders, battery tray, etc..i have ground down to the bare metal because of rust that was sprayed over by the PO..
didnt tape a damn thing off either which is another story...but anyways now that i have these down to bare metal can i just prime them paint and clear them? I am hearing that this is not going to keep the metal from rusting, and that i need to use a 2 part epoxy primer. Is this absolutely necessary for longevity? This is my first real restoration and i want to do things right and it to look good for along time..i don't want the paint bubbling in a few years because its rusting underneath. I am also doing the same thing with the front suspension and i was thinking of using the VHT chassis and roll bar paint which says you do not need a primer..i don't know if that would matter if its down to bare metal or not. I just got the control arms cleaned off and there alot of bare spots so ill probably just take them all the way down to the bare metal. thanks for any input Last edited by Drewski23; 07-20-2013 at 01:30 AM. |

Re: questions about re finishing old parts
all the parts you have mentioned that are down to bare metal i would coat with POR15// while them are almost fullyy cured but still tacky i'd spray the final top coat of color// great adhesion and longterm rust barrier
