how do i find the owner of a truck
I have located a wrecked 90s Chevy with the trans I would like. The problem is it sits on the edge of a hay field along a busy road, but there isn't a house or building for miles. The truck hasn't been registered since 05, and the front is smashed, like it hit a pole or something. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to find the owner. I have driven buy it a number of times and nobody is out there. It's 60 miles away so it's hard to drove by everyday.

Get the vin Number and license plate number and go to local law enforcement to see if its stolen. I think the DMV should give you the last registered owner but not sure they would give out the address.

With the VIN and or plate # you can find the owner online.... Of course for a fee.

I think every county in the country has a atlas showing all the landowners. Or you could probably look it up at the county courthouse.

See if you can file for an abandon title I know in Az you can not sure about other states. But the DMV will automatically try to contact the previous owner if the can within a month if no response they will issue a new title for you. Then it's yours.

Please send me a link to this!!! I need it! With that said, unless you know someone really well at DMV or the police department they will NOT release any information of the previous owner. It is against the law (invasion of property) Police are not even allowed to run tag numbers for personnel use anymore in fear of being caught doing it. They will be fired!

Re: how do i find the owner of a truck
If it was in my county I would just go to the county website and pull up the online plat book, you can find the field by clicking on the satellite photo so the satellite photo overlays the map. You can select the parcel and pull up the information on it. Ours would have the tax statements online with the name and address that the county sends the tax statements to. Then google the name and address to get a phone number. Call them up and presto, except they might say "there's a truck in my hayfield?" I don't know if your county has the online plat book, its called parcel data map here. I would assume there aren't too many companies that provide this type of software for counties so it's worth a look. Good luck. 72freak is right about the privacy laws for law enforcement and the dmv releasing information about a plate number. They probably won't do it. If you know someone at a car dealership they might be willing to run the plate for you, but yes it's technically a no no.

Re: how do i find the owner of a truck
As a retired LEO finding the land owner is the easiest and cheapest, the go knock on his door, be very polite and don't dress like you're in the hood or something worse.

You could always leave a note with your name and number on it

Re: how do i find the owner of a truck
I left a note a few weeks ago and nothing so far. I will try to see if I can find out who owns the land. I know the DMV around here wont look it up, mainly because it illegal and all, at least here.
I appreciate all you suggestions though. Erik
