Exclamation Why is oil blowing in my air cleaner??

Dont laugh.....My c-10 is constantly saturating the air filter with oil, it is coming from the valve cover breather tube that is oem, the engine is a stock 305 with a q-jet 2-barrel. What should i do to eliminate this problem? My engine needs to be rebuilt, 170k orig mi that eats a quart a month. Any help with this is much appreciated.

The most likely cause is a worn out engine. The rings are gone letting oil get by.

But, sometimes, the PCV valve can be plugged. Try a new valve and see if it helps.

Before you go to drastic conclusions, is the little foam filter still on the breather hose? If its not there, thats why its leaking. If it is there, replace it along with the PCV. It will cost under $5 for both together.

Eliminate the 305 and install a 350.

The 305 aint worth rebuilding!

Now i konw all the 305 guys are gonna defend this eng. and say how good it is but deep down they want a 350 and they know it.

So dont attack me for chevrolets down fall and for telling a fellow truck dude the truth about this POS.

Well if i change to a 350 wouldnt i have to stay within the same year model 350?? I mean i have read that to make the engine swap easier i need a similiar year engine. Im not an engine guru by far, but i need to do a swap as cheap as possible, any ideas?
Thankyou for all the input

Any 350 sbc should be a direct replacement. All the accesories should bolt right up to it from your 305. Almost the same block. I would go for a engine made in 79 or later since you can get more dress up stuff for it and it is cheaper. The dipstick would be on the drivers side and not on the passenger like the 80 to 85 blocks.

Well, the blocks should all mate up the same through 1985.

However, be aware that '86 is a one-off engine: new-style crank and bottom end, old-style valve covers and intake. '87+ is center-bolt valve covers, new-style 1-piece rear main oil seal, etc. The '85 and earlier motors also have a different flexplate and crankshaft bolt pattern than later motors.

Now, to be legal, you have to have all the emissions equipment associated with that engine for the same model year or newer of your truck. This is a Federal requirement. However, it's enforced locally, so you may get away with avoiding this-- at least for now...

As far as I know, the engine mounts and such are common and didn't really change over the years.

BUT, back to your original question. I'd put a new PVC valve and breather element in it first. If it doesn't solve your problem, then I'd be worried about blow-by like the others have said.

Good luck!
