Please help Decode this VIN

This is from a 1983 Chevy 3/4 ton 2wd forest service truck:
CBCC24M1DJ149777 The windshield is hazy so I tried my best to read it. I hope I didn't put numbers where letters are supposed to go. No pics until the site upgrades the server.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Please help Decode this VIN

You might want to re-check that VIN. There should be a number as the first digit I think. I didn't come up with anything when I run it.

Re: Please help Decode this VIN

I think you are just missing the first digit from what I can see. Everything else seems to work out if you look at the link above. Hope all that helps.

Re: Please help Decode this VIN

I think it's simply missing the "1" as the first digit, indicating US built, since there should be 17 characters.

So - working backwards, from the known values, per RS74's VIN card:

1 - US build (not shown - not always included)
C = probably a "G" indicating General Motors
B = Make = Chevy incomplete
C= brake system, 4001-5000 lbs GVW. I wonder if this is also a "G" = 8001-9000 lbs, which is about right
C = Conventional cab 2wd pickup
2 = 3/4 ton
4 = body type 2 door cab
M = 5.7 L, 4 bbl
1 = check digit
D = 1983 model year
J = Janesville WI
149777 = sequential portion of VIN

So - everything kinda lines up, but that B=Chevy Incomplete seems strange and the GVW is awfully low for a 3/4ton, which is suspect.

Re: Please help Decode this VIN

Thanks for the input! Ok, I strained my eyes and triple checked the digits and came up with: 1GBGC24M1DJ149777. Chevy incomplete explains the utility box that the forest service used. And the "G" would make sense for a 3/4 ton 8000+ GVW. I was hoping for a diesel engine code because the sticker on the radiator support showed a 6.2 engine which would make it smog exempt in CA.

Re: Please help Decode this VIN

Excellent. Those "G"s and "C"s are hard to distinguish sometimes.
