283 with T56 thoughts?

I am in the beginning stages of a frame off resto. Looking for good performance with great fuel mileage. I am thinking of using a 283 and mating up a T56 to it. Not sure which will be the best rear-end yet. My vision is to have a truck that will tow a small travel vintage travel trailer across the US. Look and run great and get mid to low 20s (w/o the trailer) and mid to high teens with it.

Your rear end ratio will depend on which T56 you get (and your tire height). There are two different ones for 93, and the 94-7 one has .5 6th. 3.73s would be a good baseline choice.

Re: 283 with T56 thoughts?

I'm running a '97 t56 with .5:1 6th and 30" tires. I swapped my 3.73 rearend to 4.11 and turn about 1600 rpm at 70 mph. With the 3.73s i'd never be able to use 6th.

I run a 283 in my shortbed with a 500 cfm Edelbrock. I tuned and built the motor for gas mileage, and my rear gear is 276. My tranny is a 4 speed saginaw and I can't acurately check my mpgs but I think mid to high teens is about the best I could get. I think 20 plus might be E.F.I. territory. My base model 4 banger '07 Tachoma gets low 20's doing a service route with a moderate load.
