Please post pics of oil and wax finished bed wood

I'm walking away from using clear coat,varnish or anything similar. I'm asking for those who have finished their bed wood in oils and waxes to post close up pics here with a description of what product you used and details with amount of coats sprayed,thinned,etc.

May not be what you are looking for but I treated my oak bed to four coats of Por 15 and three coats of Behr sating black. Sanded between each coat. Here it is after a light snow melt.

My wood is red oak with pistachio stain I used Thompson's water seal that they use for decks. I stained it first then applied Thompson's to both sides it gave it a satin look witch I was looking for. The truck does not sit outside in the weather but it has been wet a few times and the rain just beads up and runs off. I have small drain holes in the front and back of the bed..Vernski

Thanks Vernski,that's a nice finish.Thompson's has a good track record with their products.Something for me to consider.

I thinking of using some old oil from are kenworth it nice black leaves the wood old and dirty it all ready old just dry from the az sun

I don't have any pics but I redid the wood in my bed, took the time to stain and seal. looked amazing. But I don't keep my truck in doors and I never resealed it and it turned into crappy wood with cracks and everything else.. so If you do go with a wax and or oil coat its a dedication. I personally don't have that kinda time / patience so the next time i do my bed, I'm going to use trex decking and be done with it.

now I'm not sure how it will fit as far as there no true dimensional pieces. but I'm sure it can be done. get a dado blade and away we go. anyways just an idea to consider.

Sounds like to me....I should just do the 6 coats of an automotive clearcoat and be done with it.

I wonder if it will hold up if exposed to sun and some rain ?

Thoughts anyone ?

A friend recommended using Birchwood-Casey gun stock oil finish I guess it comes in gloss and satin. But Tung oil or Danish oil are similar also as you wipe the finish on and rub it in. I think the gun stock oil might be more expensive to use but I didn't price it..Vernski

Go here to Mar-k, they did extensive testing on all types of wood finishes. it made me decide to go to black por-15 and black uv inhibited paint over that. They could not find anything that really held up very long other that the black.

The problem with bed wood coatings is the design of the boards themselves. The grooves for the metal strips is a water trap and will fail the coating.

Anybody that has maintained a wood patio deck will tell you of the same experiences of coating failure on cupped boards that hold water.

The best way to handle this is to use a suitable decay resistant wood (Redwood, Cedar, etc) and use a penetrating finish with UV inhibitors. Any high quality deck and fence stain will work just fine. You will need to recoat every couple years if your truck sees the weather.

High build coatings like varnish, urethane and paint will fail eventually due to water laying in the grooves and getting behind the finish.

Thanks folks !The only problem with these type coatings is that they don't contain a high gloss agent leaving the finish some what dull.

well like i said if you go with trex, it will fade some, but I'm sure u can clear it. other than that no water damage scratch resistant, and they have all kinds of colors too choose from my personal favorite is the lava rock. but its kinda pricey and you have to custom build the bed. but if you really want to go with real would. use a red wood and i recommend like a thompson water seal. other than that your really just going to have to take time
and maintain it... i guess you could buy a tonneau cover?

Ed;it depends on how much that you are going to leave it out in the weather..the more exposure that it gets, the more maintenance it will require'
on the preceding picture it is too bad the guy didn't remove the planer snipe
before he applied the finish
