High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
I'm rebuilding a 350 4 bolt main motor to put in my truck the blocks a 69-79. Everything is all standard no boring. the motor has a mild comp cam in it and thats about it. its a 2500 truck I use it for a everyday driver. pull trailers, Plow snow with it and drive high ways. Before I start to put the motor back together I just want to see what oil would be better for me. a standard oil pump? or a high volume standard oil pump the motor has the 6 qt pan in it. The motor that is in there now when i do 75mph on the highway the oil pressure downs down to 15psi. I don't want this same problem with the new engine. Thanks

Re: High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
15psi isn't bad. My friend had a really old 350 that would idle at zero psi and get to 15 on the highway
But yes a normal pump will work fine. A standard clearance motor doesn't need any more than that Posted via Mobile Device

Re: High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
Interesting rebuild. All standard, no boring!
New or old rings? Hone for new crosshatch or not? New bearings or original ones? New or old cam bearings? New or old lifters and timing chain? A new comp cam though! Standard or the original pump woukld work. |

Re: High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
Pressure is a function of resistance. Tighter bearing clearances = higher pressure. If you're down to 15lbs, you have clearance issues. New bearings generally take care of this - INCLUDING CAM BEARINGS!!! Most folks don't want to go through the hassle of having cam bearings replaced, but they're the culprit as often as mains/rods.
That said, standard volume/pressure is fine. |

Re: High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
For a piece of mind, install a BB oil pump. It only takes a little work to fit one. Remove the drive wheels. Smooth out inside to remove casting. A smooth inside pump works better to flow oil. Smoogthing the inside works for SB pumps too.

Re: High Volume or Standard Oil Pump
No need for a high volume pump at all. A standard will suit you fine.
