HELP please tire/rim question

Hey guys I have 18 inch rims with a +20 offset. They don't make the rims in anything else currently. I have an 82 chevy k10, and the rims are perfect for what i got going so no selling them now, can't return and they are brand new. So i took it to the tire place today to throw on some used tires till i get my lift and then i will buy newer tires. The issue- I tried 285/65/18 and they rubbed only on the tie rod with wheel fully turned. Went to a 265/55/18 and it still rubbed on the tie rod. SO my question is how many of you rub the tie rod a little? I have heard of people running wider tires than that on a stock truck? I want to lift it eventually but its like i cant fit anything wide on there. THe rim is 8.5 by the way. SO has anyone used spacers or adapters? This truck will mainly be used in town. What can i do so i can keep the rim and still go to a decent sized tire?
